Remember this from last week and my puzzlement at the suddenly appearing hazard tape. Well over the last couple of days all has been revealed.
Somebody obviously had a very good future weather forecast for this week and put precautions in motion nice and early. Just look at it now from almost the same angle ... but with the addition of a moving Pug.
It's been raining non-stop since I got back and I'm sure Suky blames me. Her face when I suggest a walk is a picture!!
It felt so wet and gloomy at 8am this morning, yes I went out early while the rain had eased a little bit, now it's back with a vengeance.
I wonder how much water trees can actually drink before they simply give up all hope?
It's not as bad as last time when the river burst it's banks, but if it carries on raining it will be getting there.
It got too wet to take any more photos after this one, so it was a case of heads down and hurry home. A short and gloomy walk, that can only be followed by hot toast and coffee ... lots of lovely coffee.

On top of everything else there are so many people having to deal with flooding. It's so awful. I saw the highest tide I've seen in a very long time last week.

DeleteI live next to a river with the same issues - it can overflow very quickly whether because of rain or because water gets backed up with ice flows.
ReplyDeleteBut, the surrounding area is a flood zone protection - it's in a valley and the surrounding area is now parkland - part of the city's defences after Hurricane Hazel stuck in the 1950's - the river flooded and over 80 people were killed - the memorial is right down where I walk.
They close access to one parking lot because it can flood and the road on the other side of the river is closed during the winter - because of ice and in case of flooding.
I would not walk down there after a major rainstorm and dog walkers get warnings. A few years ago a neighbour's dog drowned when she got trapped in the current. People just don't seem to realize how quickly a river can change.
Stay safe.
There is a good flood protection scheme here, mostly to protect homes further along the river. It does at least have space to expand a bit here, further down the river at the opposite end of our walk if we continue along the tree line in the last river photo, there is a flood barrier that can be lowered into place this diverts most of the water into a huge dip in the land which is usually playing fields and the rugby ground. Better it flood there than be allowed up river and into homes.
DeleteRivers can be very dangerous places, even here where it seems so tranquil at the moment, last night it was a raging torrent and sounded like thunder.

ReplyDeleteThe difference in the water levels of the first 2 photos is incredible. You can see now why it was taped off as its crept so close to the path. Stay warm x

ReplyDeleteIt makes perfect sense now. Here the river was almost full when I left for work earlier. As it has been raining non stop all afternoon I expect it has since burst it's banks. X
ReplyDeleteThat water looks scarily high. It's been a miserable say here, too - I haven't been further than the bin - we've been watching Ironbridge putting up it's flood defenses on the local news and being very thankful we live at the top of a hill. xxx

ReplyDeleteHere we just have wind, blowing the snow down the streets, but the sun cmae out which after the past few days is a real treat.

Awful Sue, and some of the news reports about flooding in different areas is just heartbreaking. Our river is on the verge of breaking its banks, but thankfully there is room here for water to fill the fields, further upstream in town it is a different proposition.
