The Last Mince Pie

Christmas is well and truly over ... I have just eaten the last mince pie!!

Until this year I have never really liked mince pies, but all the ones I have bought or had given to me this year have been delicious.  I wonder if it's because this years helpings were all vegan, but I can't see it making that much difference to be honest.  But anyway it seems that now I am a mince pie convert. 😀

I do have a jar of mincemeat in the cupboard and a roll of pastry in the fridge so who knows I might make some for myself, or maybe they would be more special if I wait until this years Christmas season after all  the jar has a September date on it and it has brandy added so that would preserve it even more.  With my jar of Christmas Chutney in the cupboard as well it seems that I have the start of my Christmas shopping ... which might be very helpful if I've run out of housekeeping money by then.

There how many times did I just type the word Christmas in January!!

Lunch yesterday was the last portion of the homemade soup from last week.  The little garlic bread that I had with it was a huge disappointment.  It was a yellow sticker special offer from Booths sometime last year, a box with two in it and I'd already had one and really not enjoyed it, but by then I had already frozen this other one.  I had been debating throwing it away but in the mindset of waste nothing I thought it would be passible dunked in soup ... wrong!!

It was one of these.

I mean they look so tasty, it's a good example of try it once and then never again.

I finally got my 2021 roundup from my Sainsbury's shopping the other day and not to boast or anything  PP, Small Treasures, it would seem that I am the Number One buyer of Baby Bio Drip Feeders.  So I see your 4th place in the Tinned Pear league and raise you 1st in Baby Bios  😁

Oh and I was happy to see 398 portions of my fruit and veg came from good old Sainsbugs.

  1. I think an app telling me how much of something or other I'd bought would feel to me like somebody had been following me around with a clipboard and looking over my shoulder/peering into my trolley as I shopped! Big Brother is everywhere these days. What a pity about that garlic bread, it looks alright. What was wrong with it?

    1. Which is exactly what IS happening every time you use your Nectar card or Tesco Clubcard. The App on my phone is just linked to the Nectar card so that I can see and get the information that they are seeing. Big Brother is truly watching us and gathering information at every turn unfortunately.

The garlic bread looked great on the packaging and pretty good in itself ... but tasted like a stodgy flavourless cowpat!!

  2. If you're concerned about the mincemeat, you can make up the mince pies and then freeze them until next Christmas.
But I reckon it'd be OK. Add an extra slurp of brandy now (or borrow some from Alan???) and mix it in and it'll be fine.
I'm with you with the keeping some things special. I feel the same about hot cross buns - only actually over Easter.

A shame about the garlic bread. Was it taste, texture or both?

    1. Oh you know me, I'm not even slightly concerned about the date on the mincemeat. It will be better to make up the mince pies just before Christmas and enjoy them fresh, and that way I'll have room in the freezer too. I'm not adding anything to the jar as that would mean breaking the seal, things keep so much better with the factory seal intact.

Yes hot cross buns only at Easter is how I feel too, although I have been known to buy one of the hot cross bun style loaves occasionally in place of teacakes. It was taste and texture with the garlic bread, with a side order of total stodginess.

  3. OMG, Sue, you've beaten me, but you can't have it with ice cream can you! 😂 I always feel a bit sad when the last mince pie has been eaten too but I do wait until the next December before I buy more. It makes them more special. That was a shame about the garlic bread. It looks so tasty.

    1. Oh gosh definintely not, but the plants enjoyed the feed I bought them. It made me really laugh when I saw the email, I thought of you immediately :-)

  4. I too have one last mince pie in the freezer - I have a feeling it will be gone by the end of next week. I have a jar of mincemeat in the pantry but, like many people, I only eat them at Christmas - same with Quality St. chocolates - when they went on sale after Christmas I could have stockpiled enough for the year - but then they wouldn't be special come next December.

I had an email from the grocery store whee I have my Loyalty Card and I received $230 worth of points last year - so yeah! Apparently my biggest purchase was on their own brand organic milk!

    1. It's just nicer isn't it to try and eat a little bit seasonally, we all need something to look forward too. It's also why I rarely buy things like strawberries out of season, apart from being very expensive when not in season here in the UK they are also pretty tasteless.

You did really well there!! I guess if I did all my shopping in one store I could pick up a lot more points, but our Sainsbury's is such a little branch, so I divide my loyalty between the three supermarkets in town ... and occasionally elsewhere.

  5. I had to google "Baby Bio Drip Feeders" because I had no idea what they were. Plant food? I have never bought that.
I used to make sweet potato casserole only for Thanksgiving here but it was so yummy that I've made it again already and will have it more often. Delicious!

    1. My plants definitely needed working on last year after mostly in Alan's care the year before. These little feeders are nice and concentrated and did the job wonderfully.

Sweet potato casserole sounds lovely 😍

  6. Isn't it appropriate that a vegan places #1 in buying plant food? :) Of course, not necessarily when it comes to a grocery store purchase. Lol

As for big brother and loyalty cards, I baulked when a new grocery store came into the area and not only wanted my name, address and phone number, but also my driver's license number. What??? No. Just no.

    1. Haha I hadn't thought of that, sometimes my plants were being better fed than me. 🤣

I was going to scrap my Tesco Clubcard because it felt so 'Big Brother' but then they really increased the offers that you get. You literally get some foods at a pound or more off, and when you add up a trolley full that's can be a huge saving. So really they are paying you so that they can monitor your shopping. It's all a balancing act isn't it, weighing up the pros and cons.

  7. Sorry that your garlic bread was not up to par. But if you hadn't tried it you would never have known so that is a plus.

    God bless.
