An Extra £5 ... and A Good Store

Yesterday I got my latest Booths voucher through the post, now it's only for £5 but when you're doing a ten pounds a week housekeeping Challenge, suddenly £5 seems a lot of extra money.

As any vouchers or coupons that arrive after the start of the Challenge are outside the Challenge total funds this can be used for anything I want.  I have one £2.50 Tesco voucher still to use up within Challenge funds and of course there are the Sainsbury's Nectar points still included for now.

It didn't take me long to figure out that this particular voucher would mean I could buy myself a little treat for my birthday, which is next month ... something to look forward to.

What would you buy yourself for your birthday with a £5 supermarket voucher bearing in mind that this particular one is a slightly more upmarket supermarket.  If you don't know Booths, it's along the same sort of lines ... and prices ... as Waitrose but is a family owned supermarket that specialises in local produced products and supporting the local area that each branch is in.  They are a good store.

They have already removed all foods that have any connection with Russia from their shelves and have started a cash collection point for the people of Ukraine in every branch, which they are going match pound for pound up to the value of £15,000. 👍👏💖

As I said they are a good store!!

  1. There's no Booths down here, sadly. Not many Waitrose either, come to that. Booths sounds a good store, we could do with more places like that who have a good community conscience. Hmm, £5.....I think I'd buy a nice piece of cheese and if there was enough money left, some nice crackers to go with it. I look forward to finding out what you spend yours on.

    1. I have a few weeks to deliberate, maybe nearer to my birthday something will be needed. Cheese is a good idea and yes, I think crackers would fit into a £5 budget too.

  3. Firstly, hats off to Booths for collecting for Ukraine. It seems that lots of shops and supermarkets have withdrawn Russian products too including Sainsbury's. I heartily applaud the protest as I feel so helpless to do anything else to help.
Now, as for the voucher....hmm...my choice would probably be chocolate but as you have a fair stash of that still, maybe a birthday cake?
You have plenty of time to mull it over Sue! Enjoy choosing ;)

    1. After reading your comment I Googled it and yes lots of the UK supermarkets have made this stance ... nice to know.

Haha ... no I definintely don't need chocolate, there should still be enough left to cover me for Easter and my birthday.

    1. I might have known you would say that, I could get a lot of books from the charity shop or a car boot sale with £5, but as it's Booths and all their books are full price that would be a no go for me. Even magazines these days can be more than £5 each can't they :-(

  5. Hi, Sue. My birthday is next month and I would probably go for some lovely hand cream rather than edibles as I am doing Slimming World! Half way to my goal so would rather not scupper things!

    1. That's a good idea, for me though I do have some hand cream in stock but I might have a peruse of the toiletries aisle to see what's available for my £5 voucher.

  6. I love Booths - just been to the Lake District for a week and my first port of call was Booths in Windemere. Not going to say how much I spent as it definitely wouldn't fit a frugal budget but I was on holiday ( first since 2019 ) on the plus side I went to the Hayes garden centre in Ambleside and didn't spend a penny - what's that all about? 1. If you can't treat yourself when on holiday, when can you. Good for you.

Windermere is a dangerous place for me to visit what with Booths, Lakeland just at the top of the hill and Hayes a few minutes away. There was always so much temptation when I worked in Bowness.

  7. I think for me it would have to be a couple of large flat portobello mushrooms and an avocado and if enough left over some alpro soy cream. I would have the avocado as a starter and make a lovely dish for mains using the mushrooms and cream ,or instead of the cream, two crusty rolls and have mushroom " burgers ", I love to fry the large mushrooms in butter or oil and a little garlic and before putting them in the bun place the buns cut side down in the pan to absorb the garlicky juices. Whatever you choose to spend it on it will be such a treat !

    1. Ooh, we have such different tastes, but it would be a real treat with your £5 for you by the sounds of it. I've seen a lot of clips of 'mushroom burgers' it's such a good idea if you like mushrooms.

(I hate the taste and texture of mushrooms and I'm allergic to avocados.)

  9. Booths sounds like a wonderful shop! I'd probably go for booze, some locally produced craft ale. xxx

    1. Booze is a good suggestion, it would have to be a wine for me, or perhaps a nice cider.

  10. You've got some great suggestions here! If I was buying edibles I would go for cake or chocolate. However, there is a part of me that would get a book or a special magazine!

  11. Wow that’s nice to get sent a voucher on your birthday. I would probably go for store cupboard essentials, that I know I need. Plus a couple of treats that I have really wanted to try for a while. I would probably spend it wisely after what my mum has been telling me about the cost of living rise in general foodstuffs.
It scares me. It’s not too bad here as we are not affected but the Ukraine which angers and saddens me at the same time. But good for booths.
Also buy the doggies a treat

  12. I would do a small bunch of flowers in the brightest colors available...or some chocolate.

  13. Hmmm, perhaps a few bars of a lovely scented soap or as someone else said a plant.

    God bless.
