A Very Sobering Thought

One Week's Food on Ration Challenge Week - less than £3.50

We went to Booth's for some shopping the other day and decided to treat ourselves to a little bit of lunch.  We were economical and we each chose a 50% off toasted sandwich and Alan picked the last slice of Victoria Sponge which also had 50% off, being cardholders we also got a reduction because we had a coffee and a cake.

As you can see from the copy of the receipt at the bottom of this post it came to £13.69 ... enough cash to feed a refugee for ONE MONTH.

A very sobering thought!!

I'll be back tomorrow to show you my final preparations for the Ration Challenge ... I'm out today to buy garlic and spring onions the only fresh foods I need to get for the week ... and then I will be posting each day afterwards for the whole of the Ration Challenge Week.  Sharing each days food the day after I eat it, so that I can take photos for you to see my masterpieces or mush ... we'll see which it is. 😄

My Growing Space Has Gotten Smaller and Smaller ...

A bit of sunshine and all us green-fingered folk are itching to get planting aren't we  🌳

But there's an icy edge to the breeze at the moment, and although I got Alan to tip the three bags of compost that we bought last year into the new raised bed ready for some planting next month, I quickly covered it with opened out bags that it came in, weighted down with some leftover bits from building the bed last year so that the soil underneath can warm up ready for planting next month.

I did pinch a bit of the newly opened compost to put into these little pots to start off some seeds though.  It was nice sitting in the sun on the patio dibbing away and sowing the seeds.  Mostly vegetables but a couple of pots of flower seeds too.  And that larger green planter in the background got some flower seeds sprinkled into it too.

Taking that top photo which shows the whole of my growing space for this year made me think back to my previous vegetable growing areas.

This one was when we lived in Oxfordshire on our first farm, this photo shows just the vegetable beds behind the house, we grew all our own  onions and potatoes here, the pigs used to love home grown potatoes.    We also had a 12ftx 25ft polytunnel next to the small pig enclosure and orchard and another assortment of raised beds behind where I was stood to take this photo filled with more onions, salad crops and lavender ... lots of lovely lavender.

This was the first growing year at our rented small holding, utilising the plastic beds that we had brought with us from the first farm.  The wind had kindly ripped down the polytunnel and left them all exposed for us to disassemble.  Here we just had about 5.5 acres, mostly given over to field and chicken enclosure.

And look who's photo I found in the same file as the last one ... a very young and pretty Suky.

And of course most of you will remember our small holding in North Wales before we moved back to England.  Lots of growing room on the hillside along side the little orchard and Summer chicken run.

With the green Net Tunnel, designed with a wire mesh bottom layer to keep the pesky hillside rabbits off some of our salad crops and with space for the Blueberries, so we could eat them instead of the birds ...

... and the polytunnel, filled with the tender indoor type crops, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, spinach, and delicate leaves etc.

These two tunnels were also 12ft x 25ft as it was a size that really suited us.

My new growing space is just 6ft x 8ft ... and that is the total floor space, the actual raised bed is much smaller. So I can see that I'm going to have to get very inventive this year.  My main plan is to use the wooden bed for salad crops... spinach, lettuce, radish, spring onions etc and then have some French beans in the small black planter on the opposite side, with some Bags for Life being lined up along side it for a few potato plants.  Oh and a couple of large pots for courgettes.

And of course I can't forget my little tin bath at the front door, which is very handy for snipping herbs from when I'm in the kitchen, so it adds another couple of foot of growing space.  I might put a few garlic cloves in here too, all that wasted space makes me want to fill it a little bit more.

My newly sown seeds were basking in the early morning sunshine when I pulled back the curtains this morning.

Second Month of Challenge - Comparison Photos

February

So here we are the first day of the second month of my No Spend Challenge, and time for you and me to play a little bit of Spot the Difference.

January

I don't think there's a huge amount of difference between the two photos of my main larder cupboard, it's neater and I don't have to rearrange quite a many things when I need to get something out though that's for sure.

February

The fridge shows a marked difference, well you would expect it to wouldn't you.  The fresh stuff had to be eaten first.

January

A few things were opened and eaten and a then second portion of it transferred to the freezer so that I could have a good selection of foods over the course of the month and to make sure that nothing went over it's Use By date.

February

A very different door at the moment.  I do have an almond milk in the cupboard that should be transferred into here ready for use.  But I always use long-life plant milks so they don't have to be in the fridge until they are needed.

January

With leftover Christmas alcohol and a few more chocolate bars it looked much fuller.

February

The fridge drawer will never change much as I usually have the same things in,  it's the same onions, celery and lettuce as the January photo, but the tomatoes are new.

January

Slightly fuller and a different pack of tomatoes.

February

The biggest difference is that there is no food on the top of my little drawer unit now, just cookbooks and the Challenge Pot.

January

All the food has been eaten and the red Flour tin is now on the shelf where the cookbooks used to live.  Filled with some of the sweets that had the longest shelf life ... out of sight out of mind was the plan!

February

The top sweetie drawer this month.

January

And the sweetie drawer last month.  Some of these are in the red flour tin and some have been donated to the Food Bank trolley at our local supermarket.

February

Just two unopened jars of coffee now and one of the bags of crisps that used to live in the bedroom.

January

Last month there were three jars in here, not much difference then.  The other jar was used to top up the Kilner jar of coffee I keep by the kettle ready for making a drink, so I do still actually have it.

So there is less food and the biggest change for me is that there is no food in the bedroom, out on surfaces or hidden away in non-foody places.  The boxes of crisps have now been absorbed into the gaps in the kitchen, the jars of jam that were in my little green chest are now at the back of the larder cupboard and food that was out on worktops has now either been eaten or has fitted nicely into the space it should have been in originally.

End of Month Financials

Cash Spent  £9.32
Booth's Voucher  £10.00
Nectar Points  £5.00

 Making a total of £24.32

This morning I can take out this months £50 and the money leftover from January has been put into a different pot.  One that I have decided that I will allow myself to dip into if and when I really need it for anything.  It's really nice to now have a little safety cushion.

So it's been a great first month, but I have noted that although I have bought little actual food over the course of January I still managed to spend almost half of the budget.  While this doesn't seem like much of a problem now, with food prices rising, my budget staying the same and knowing that my store-cupboard supplies will start to dwindle before the second half of the Challenge, this year is looking to be very interesting indeed.
