When the rain lashes down all night on the roof of the Van like a Yorkshireman learning to tap dance in his hobnail boots, and the winds blow unknown things around with sporadic clatters and bangs it's good to have a leisurely breakfast and then a morning pottering in the kitchen.
The rain has stopped now, and the Van door is clipped open. The warm wind stirs the beaded curtain and outside the song of hundreds of relieved birds, drying out after a wild wet night sing their morning chorus.
It really is the perfect time to grab a cook book and gather together ingredients from my still full cupboard. Within minutes there is a pan of Dahl puttering away on the hob filling the air with the most wonderful aroma.

Cosy after a rough night in the Van, with enough Dahl for at least four meals cooking away on the hob it's a good start to a fresh new week. Are we going to have the intense heat that the weather forecasters have promised us ... at the moment is seems improbable, but the warm winds could be the start of it.
Anyway me and the dogs are heading along the motorway to Wales in a couple of hours after a ricey, dahly lunch and a quick hoover round. . Leaving a nice clean van ... and tubs of Dahl in the freezer ready for our next visit.

It's a real hot breezy day in Essex. I've already stripped 2 beds, washed dried and remade said beds. Glorious. I think as large crunchy salad for tea with frittata. We had the wind and the rain on Friday night, I lay awake thinking of my daughter and grand children inside a flimsy tent at the Latitude festival in Ipswich.
ReplyDeleteI was hoping to get home ... as I am now ... and put a load of bedding straight into the washer to get it on the line and dry today, but although we still have the warm breeze here in Wales it is drizzling too :-(

DeleteI used to love the sound of the rain hammering on the caravan roof when I was warm and cozy inside. Safe drive and have a lovely time in Wales (I was there for a few days last week and the weather was glorious).

DeleteWild night here too, and now a surprisingly mild breeze. I suspect the "heatwave" will pass us by - it usually does.
ReplyDeleteThe dahl recipe looks splendid, can I ask a question seeing as you're very experienced with these ingredients - what, if anything, could I use instead of the coconut milk?
If you eat dairy you could use single cream, creme fraiche or yogurt. If you don't eat dairy you could do as I do when I haven't any coconut milk in and either use a non-dairy yogurt or some almond milk. Although after making a much simpler Dhal with few ingredients when I was doing the Ration Challenge you could simply miss it out and I bet it would still taste lovely!
DeleteIt's already as hot as the weathermen predicted here today. Although I love the sun the temps they are talking about for Wednesday - when I have to go to the dentist - sound awful.

Thank you, I'm house sitting while Alan works down South for a few days. Nice to see Ginger again, I've missed him. I'm going to get him used to travelling so he can come with me, he's not been in the car for ages.

I do like driving and the dogs are both good travellers so it's easy getting from one home to the other. They just hunker down in their beds on the back seat of my car and sleep the journey away. They recognise the action and SatNav wording of me getting off the dual carriageway when we get close to home and start getting a bit more interested. The same when we head back to the Van, as soon as I turn off the M6 they are stood up as far as their seat belts allow watching out of the window.

I made one of their recipes this morning too - a huge vat of Sweet Potato and Coconut Curry, which is supper for tomorrow night, and lots of portions for the freezer. I am currently eating "Vegan with Meat" which sounds crazy but avoids the Dairy I can't manage at present!
