The Oldies That Stay

Thanks so much for all the comments yesterday, it's great to have input and keep me thinking about my intentions and plans for the new place.  So I thank you all 😀

What I do know for sure is that only a few things are coming with me from the flat and from Isfryn.  The main item of course is my much loved Welsh Bread and Cheese in the top photo which will be in the space between the end of the run of kitchen units and the windows next to the front door.

This will be used as my main food larder, with heavier tins in the bottom part and other food in the top cupboard.

This bench, formerly from my shop and then all our previous homes after that, will be on the opposite wall for sitting on to put on shoes etc ...

... and above it will be these hooks and perhaps the mirror too.

The little green chest ... Alien as he has been christened ... will probably be in the bedroom, he currently holds the television here at the flat.

The final definite piece of furniture is my bookcase/cupboard, which I think will be in the living room for all my non-cook books.  I can't imagine living in a place without this, it is another item that I have had for more years than I care to think about and was also a shop fitting.

The bureau that bought after moving into the flat and that I use as my office space, will probably be coming if I can find a place where it looks nice.  It is really useful and holds such a lot of stuff it would be a shame not to be able to have it at the annexe if possible.  And of course my new-to-me mirror will also be re-used.

These curtains will definintely be coming with me and will most likely be in the bedroom, where they are more than big enough to cover the window and the double doors.  The recently purchased corner bookshelves may come with me, or if I can't fit them anywhere ... I don't have many actual corners ... Alan has said he will have them for his spare room.

I do need to buy a few things for my new home ... a four foot bed similar to the king-sized one I had at the Van with full under-bed storage, a sofa ... I am currently debating between a corner style or a simple three seater ... and a wardrobe.

I will only need a small double wardrobe with one or two drawers at the bottom as I really don't have that many clothes now and any out of season stuff will be able to go under the bed.  Something a bit like this is my preferred option.

So as you can see I have been thinking about, and indeed still am thinking about so much.  We are going to the properties today to take more measurements and to get the info needed that the window repair people have asked for as we are having some of Alan's windows repaired, a very necessary cat-flap fitted into his back door in a new panel, and we are also having all the locks changed.

First though it's time for some lunch.

Take care.

  1. Glad you are having the door locks change as you never know who has keys! Just love those pieces of furniture so are glad they are coming. My all time favourite has to be the cheese cupboard. Thought your idea yesterday of a radiator cover/unit in the kitchen is also grand.

  2. I love all your furniture !
You will fit it in nicely, I am sure.
Glad for you to be so content, happy even.

  3. You have some brilliant ideas, Sue, and it's lovely that you will be able to fit some 'old friends' into your new home too. I would dearly love some shelving near the sink in the kitchen as well as by the door in the bathroom (instead of having a small ladder unit which gathers dust) but G is no longer confident in doing DIY and we have no idea who to ask to do it for us. I'm still waiting for a bathroom mirror more than 15 months on! I'll probably have to wait until we can see the family. Son in Law is prepared to have a go at most things. BTW I didn't know you could get 4 foot beds with storage....I could fit one into the space in my small bedroom...hmmm. Thank you for the inspiration! I really like the wardrobe you've chosen too.

  4. Have you ever taken a look at the Frenchic paint community on FBook. I'm advocating thevpaint as I've not used it but my eldest has and loves it. But some of furniture transformations on there are incredible. It might give you some ideas. Utilising as much as possible is always good. X

    1. Although my corner bookshelves and the mustard coloured mirror are painted in chalk paint and then a protective coat I wouldn't dream of painting any of my other pieces. I love them most because they are natural wood, even though the colours are not the same they all compliment each other beautifully. I want wood to be the grounding factor in all of the rooms.

Any furniture I do repaint in my latest shade of green ... Nana's chairs for instance, which are currently in two different shades of green, will be painted in satin woodwork paint as it has a more durable finish.

  7. Wonderful pieces.

Whenever I moved to a new place (in the days before there was software for design layouts), I would get all the room, window and door opening dimensions and transfer them onto graph paper. Then I would measure the larger pieces of furniture and cut out small pieces of paper relative to size of the graph paper. Did it for both the floor plan and wall areas. It allowed me to move around the furniture to get the best layout--flow, walking space, not blocking windows or doors. Frankly, it was just fun to do, but it also saved me from bringing/buying anything that wouldn't fit the new space. And it helped on moving day as I already knew where things would go. Have fun with your plans!

    1. My Dad did this when we got our first ever house as a family. He measured all the rooms and did exactly as you did. I loved playing with all the little cardboard 'pieces of furniture' that he also measured out to scale., It was like playing with a flat dollhouse and every time I wanted to change the layout of my bedroom I would get out his envelope of rooms and furniture and have a play. It saved a lot of moving furniture about to see it on paper first.

    1. Haha ... it could have maybe qualified for this when the annexe was originally being designed from the garage space it used to be but not now, I am only re-jigging the kitchen and re-decorating. Once with a tv crew round for the day is more than enough for me.

    1. It seems a lot of people love my little bench, I am also drooling over a similar one that has just appeared as a shop fitting in our local men's clothing shop :-)

  11. We recently bought the house we had been renting. I also replaced the locks, but replaced them with digital rather than key locks. I had a locksmith come and fit them for me (my husband is beyond DIY now and fitting locks is well outside my skill set). I can change the combination if necessary without having to install new locks. Money well spent, in my opinion.

  12. Your furniture is so well chosen. Those pieces are certainly going to turn your new place into your home in very short order!

  13. Sorry, I'm confused. Have you bought two new homes?

    1. The flat was only ever a temporary measure when I sold the Van and until I bought somewhere permanent here in Garstang.

  14. Your Welsh cupboard is stunning, it will look fabulous in the entry and make the space warm and welcoming.
If you feel you need storage there you could glue a custom size piece of mirror glass to the black board cupboard and fit it near your hooks.
I don't wear shoes in my house either so a nice floor rug near the bench will be welcoming and comfortable...if the pups don't come home too filthy😊

    1. The blackboard cupboard is a lot tattier and flimsier in real life than I think you are imagining it to be, it will be going in the skip when the kitchen is being taken apart.

Yes I will be putting rugs in all the rooms once all the work is finished and the furniture is in place so I can see how large they need to be, including a long runner up the centre of the kitchen space starting at the door. Suky is rarely dirty after a walk as she hates getting her feet muddy, but there WILL be a towel on standby on the hooks just in case :-)

  15. Great idea to get the locks changed. We did that as well when we moved into this house, and have changed them again.

    I really love that bench.

    God bless.

  16. When we bought the old ramen shop and promised the old owner that it wasn’t going to be another ramen shop. We had a mammoth task that is still going on 12 years later. I dont think we have really bought new furniture, we have either reused what was here, ok some you couldn’t as it was grotty with grease and Grime ohh and the yellow from the Smoke was bad.
We just had to work with what we had and still do . We kept the kitchen as it is stainless and it was only replaced before his retirement. And I love it’s industrial feel. And it never ages, my mum and dads in the UK is reclaimed and it is really unique . But over time and a growing family we have just adapted it from a ramen house to a family home. Just don’t rush. We did and we had to change all kinds of things luckily we had the junk man round the corner to help us out.
I could Imagine a unique kitchen In your home. Take care and keep safe.

    1. Yes, I have done many homes up this way over the course of the last forty years or more years. I started out with no money when I married for the first time in 1978 and lived in some really grotty places that over time we did up on a shoestring budget, having great fun in the process and raising my boys.

Now it's my time and at last I can afford to have the things I want and do it all in one fell swoop before I move in, so I am doing this planning now so that what I do put in place I can enjoy for my remaining years.

  17. Sue i have a 3 seater that is long enough for a visitor to sleep on if necessary and find that good. I also look for one with arms wide enough to put a cuppa on, or for the cat to sit on.

    1. If anyone needs to stay over they can sleep in Alan's large spare room, although a sofa would be a good emergency back-up too if push came to shove. No large arms on it though as I prefer slimmer arms just wide enough to rest your arm on and not take up too much space in the room, I don't have a lot of space on the wall where the sofa is going.
