That Perfect Toast Moment

Is there anyone else out there who has to have that perfect toast moment you know the one I mean, the one when you get to the toast the second it's popped out of the toaster and butter a corner and bite into it before the butter has time to melt.

I do it every time ... it was even tasty this morning when my toast was slightly overdone.  I like my toast pale, or 'hot bread' as my son used to call it.  Hot and just crispy enough on the outside to qualify as toast but not too coloured.  Anymore of the dreaded black on this piece of bread and it would have been broken up as bird food ... or offered to Alan who relishes a slice of charcoal tasting toast 😄

I remember Delia Smith's Cookery Course on the television, it must have been back in the 80s or 90s, and one of the first programmes was about 'how to boil an egg' and 'how to make the perfect toast'.  I tried the toast method her way straight after the programme, which is basically getting it to the colour you like and then letting the toast stand in a toast rack or leaning against the marmalade jar for 60 seconds before buttering it to let all the steam escape.  It worked a treat so it's something I try to do every time now.

I've just actually found the instructions HERE.

Anyway back to the colour, which of these would be your preference?

I'm definintely a number two girl ... with the first corner eaten immediately and the rest buttered a few seconds later and enjoyed with black coffee.  Now I have to go all this talk of toast has made me want another slice and as it's a Bank Holiday weekend here in the UK I don't see why I can't have a second breakfast  😋

  1. 3 for me, I could cheerfully live on toast. It's my go to comfort food.

  2. I'm a number 3 - I hate it when I order something toasted at a cafe and it comes as "warmed bread" :-)

  3. 2 for me too, but crumpets are different, I like them quite brown, I do not like a soggy crumpet. If I am having mushrooms on toast I love to pour the buttery mushroomy juices on there too.You are touching on my favourite subject _____ food.:)x

  4. number 4 would be nearly done for me! Husband like you, number 2. But toast is lovely any time of day... or sometimes in the night, if I wake.

  5. I am a number 3 girl , but so often it is a number 4+ because the dial has been moved . Last night tea was boiled eggs and toast really lovely .

  6. This morning, I had my (light) toast fresh out of the toaster with peanut butter and the slightest drizzle of honey. Usually, though, if I have them, I prefer sliced tomatoes and black pepper.

  7. 3 or at a push 4. DDiL is 1 really, warm bread we call her toast.

  8. Definitely a number 3 girl here. A "perfect toast moment" and black coffee...yum!

  9. I like mine lightly toasted and butter not melted and covered in marmite.

  10. I like 3 but would eat 2 no problem. Lately I have had to deal with 4 more often than I want, but a quick scrape across takes care of all the burnt part.

  11. The perfect toast for me has to be seeded bread. If I use fresh bread it only takes a minute, frozen bread takes a bit longer and needs to be watched and ejected when ready. Lightly brown, I let it cool for a few seconds, then butter it with fake Lurpak.

  12. Number 2 with 3 at a push. OH would prefer his toast "Well fired " as they say in Kilmarnock! So even 4 would be a wee bit pale for him,

  13. Number 3 would be my choice. Preferably toasted on an Aga, spread with real butter and some home made jam or marmalade. X

    1. Aga toast really is the best. You haven't experienced 'proper toast' until you've used an Aga toast racquet 😀

  14. Definitely number 2 for me. Gs choice would be number 1 (stale bread in my view 🤣)

  15. I'm a No 4.
My favourite toast is laid on a rack over a ring on an electric cooker.
The taste is the nearest thing to old fashioned toast made with a roasting fork over a coal fire.

  16. YES YES YES! The corner ,with the just spread un-melted butter.....yum. Glad I'm not the only one!! 3-4 my go to toast shades. Janine

  17. It's got to be 3! Ever tried buttering the toast and then sprinkling it with a bit of sugar mixed with just a tiny bit of cinnamon? Yummy!

  18. 3 for me too - but I prefer it when it has cooled down with thick butter that doesn't melt. If there was cheese on the toast it would be 4+ as I can't eat cheese whilst it is stringy it has to be done to death. Costa always put their cheese and tomato toasties through the grill twice for me to get that almost just burnt look!!

  19. 3 for me too, let it cool just enough that the real Butter doesn't melt (Australian salted Butter) but have been known to do the hot corner trick, so indulgent and yummy....simple pleasure.

  20. 2 for me as well with the butter spread with a heavy hand so it melts into the toast, number 4 or if there was a 5 for hubby with the butter spread extremely gentle so it doesn't damage the toast:) Who knew there was so many ways to make a slice of toast. Thanks for the post Sue xx

  21. I's go with two and three and yes - that perfect moment . . . there's nothing like it.

  22. 2 for me. I like toast with peanut butter or marmite. We only real butter at Christmas then it's butter and toast!! Grow up, we had an open fire and often have 'fire toast' yum.

  23. I remember that programme as I learnt a new word. If you don't let the steam out your toast goes "wangy"

  24. Definitely number two for me. I always let my toast 'stand' for a few seconds before buttering. I like cold toast and then buttered - is that weird??!!

  25. 2 or 3 would do for me. The toaster here at the holiday let makes me smile every day as it chucks the slice right out rather than just popping up.
I could happily live on peanut butter on toast as long as I could have marmalade for breakfast.

  26. 4 please and I really like Marmite but don't get it spread properly unless I do Marmite first then the Fake Lurpak. Have to lick the brown off the knife before going into the butter. Good job I live alone.

  27. Number four for me, thanks very much! I usually have two slices on a Sunday, one spread with Whole Earth peanut butter and the other with Morrison's yeast spread - I don't do butter or marg. x

  28. After the best part of a year in Italy I’d love a piece of ready toasted slice multi grain bread or some seeded batch. The bread here just isn’t good toasted, though we do in cold weather, in summer we just eat bread and jam for breakfast. I’m hungry now.

  29. #2 or 3 for me. A thick slice of homemade bread just out of the oven and still warm with butter spread on top makes me almost as happy as toast. Comfort food is always wonderful.

  30. Japanese have a thing about the perfect toast, for me it has to be 3, my own homemade milk loaf medium sliced fresh from the toaster with a nice spread of spread and strawberry jam just heavenly.
We can get all sorts of gadgets here a machine that revives your stale loaf and then produces amazing toast if you have £150 spare that is. A small tetrracotta Peice you dunk in water and then you place next to your bread so you get light and fluffy toast in the grill that does work I own one. Many other gadgets for Japanese toast lovers.
Plus the well I don’t know what to call it the chunky sweet toast loaded with fruit and cream and kids favourite.

  31. Between 2 and 3 is the right spot for me. I've just discovered there's one pack of extra thick (American style, as they say here in Germany) slices on offer now from one national bakery. Won't be having that regularly, but for special occasions, that's the one for me :D
