New House Update - 2

One of the reasons that our house renovations have taken so long is that although when we viewed the property everything looked good, on closer inspection once it was empty this was not the case with the main house.  A lot of the walls and the bathroom ceiling needed the old plaster taking off.  Once the wallpaper and ceiling paper had been removed there were a lot of cracks and damage underneath that we really hadn't expected, so they had to be re-plastered before painting.

Luckily the warmer weather over the last two weeks has meant that the plaster dried out nicely and now everywhere is painted.

As in the top photo this is the front bedroom ... now known as the red room ... with the fitted wardrobes removed and completely re-plastered.

At the back of the house is Alan's soon-to-be office - henceforth known as 'the purple room'

The little box room or 'the blue room'.

Each room has one wall painted in Alan's choice of colour and a matching lampshade.  The 'blue room' also has plain blue curtains.  The lampshades were bought from Dunelm and then the paint colours mixed to match them exactly.

The living room ... the paint cans were removed the day after I took this photo.   All the radiators were put back on the walls at the start of this week and the central heating boiler in both properties re-checked by a qualified gas engineer.  The carpets will be fitted in the whole house on Friday of this week.

Last week new windows were installed over most of the house and all the locks changed, today the snagging work was done and a cat flap for Ginger was installed in the bottom half of the back door.

I ordered my Smeg weeks ago and have had to wait for it until Monday of this week.  Alan loved the photos of mine so much he ordered himself the black version ... and it was delivered almost immediately.  He is very smitten with it, and as you can see it fits in with his snazzy light fittings very well 😀

A little doggy update too.

They both went for a good grooming session last week and Mavis has had her two-yearly clipping to turn her into a sleek version of the scruffy Jack Russell she usually is.  I think it makes her little tail look very strange, luckily they left her distinctive eyebrows intact.

  1. Two very different colour schemes for both of you, but the joy for both of you to have your own spaces exactly how you want them! Hope you're moving a bit more freely now Sue, and able to enjoy your new home.

    1. As long as I don't lift anything I should be okay. 🤞

  3. What lovely pops of colour. Interesting choices and getting the paint mixed to match the lampshades was genius.

    God bless.

    1. Alan's taste has always been for bright colours, I'm at the opposite end of the scale 😀

  4. All looking very nice, good to see an end in sight, so exciting when move in is close.
Do hope your back is improving, perhaps you could consider some yoga or pilates classes for flexibility and core strength going forward, should be easy to find in new village and lovely to meet new locals.

    1. Yes, that's what I am going to do as soon as I've healed enough to make it possible. Gentle yoga and learning some basic and back strengthening Pilates from my physiotherapist's wife who is a Pilates teacher.

  6. I'm impressed, you are putting everything exactly right with new plaster, paint and decor. Your tradesmen are doing fabulous custom work for you. Mavis looks adorable with her short summer haircut and distinctive eyebrows. I hope the physio has helped relieve your pain.

  8. You're making progress! Rome wasn't built in a day, you could say to yourself as you pour a restorative drink! I love Alan's light fitting... I think! Until I read your text I thought it was wires neatly wrapped up awaiting the fitting!!

    1. Nope, it's a snazzy LED light fitting from Dunelm. They look quite impressive when the two of them light up the kitchen. Not my style at all but they do suit the overall design of the kitchen, and perfectly match that black Smeg.

  9. You both have very different tastes when it comes to decorating. My husband's taste is for stronger colours too and he can't understand me wanting wallpaper!! Couldn't have it in our old farmhouse as walls so bumpy and out of alignment (16th C jerry-builders!)

Hoping you will both be happy in your respective homes. With you on the sore back as I was manhandling full planters yesterday.

    1. Totally different tastes ... and for the first time in our 17 years together neither of us has to dilute our taste to keep the other happy. It can only be a good thing 😃

  10. I really like all the different color schemes that Alan has in his rooms. We have a red bedroom with black and cream accents decorated in an Asian style so it fits the color. I never thought I would paint a room red but now I love it. I have never seen that brand of refrigerator so I wonder if maybe we don't have them here. It sure is sleek looking! Mavis and Suky sure look spiffy with their new cuts! I imagine they will be happy when you permanently move into your new home.

    1. I've seen a few American YouTubers with Smeg fridge/freezers so they must be available over the pond.

I think all the animals will enjoy having garden space again, some outdoor area to call their own.

  11. Ah, I see what you mean about the purple.....bit too in your face even for me and I LOVE purple! Alan does like strong, primary colours, doesn't he? Well, he's getting what he wants, as are you, so all's good. The rooms do look clean and sleek now they're professionally plastered and painted. There's nothing nicer than a freshly groomed lovely smelling dog, is there? Pity they don't stay so fresh smelling for long though....Betty has a habit of rolling gleefully in mud, fox or badger poo or even dead animals, yuck.

    1. It is a very strong colour isn't it 🤭.

Ours are usually quite good at staying clean after a groom, but then three days later Suky always goes into a massive moulting session. Pugs are terrible for shedding.

  12. It's better than having 2 brand new homes with all the work you have had done; stripping everything back so far, you know there are no nasty surprises. Alan's colour schemes are very vibrant; I'd choose your annex, which has a lovely peaceful feel. My house could really do with replastering, but while I'm looking after my 93 year old Mom (in another house that needs replastering!) and with all the other stuff that needs doing to keep 2 houses going, I just can't face it.

    1. I don't blame you, it sounds as though you are terribly busy at the moment. People, especially Mums, are so much more important than houses and renovating. 🤗

  13. I love that you are both so thorough in getting the house and annex in order. I would love to have a bungalow but know that we could never do up an older property, it would be too daunting at our age. Alan's colour choices are very bold! I'm more of a neutral colour lover as we only manage to redecorate every 10 years or so!
The doggies look so pristine ;)

    1. Yes, once my places are decorated they stay that way for years. That's why I go for mostly neutrals and let the accessories add the colour. I would soon get very tired of a bright red wall 😳

Our bedroom is painted a similar red to Alan's, except it's on all our walls. xxx

    1. I think your red doesn't seem as 'in your face' because it's tempered with all the other colours, Alan's is against stark white. Perhaps it will be better after tomorrow when the grey carpets go down and there is at least one more other colour.

  16. The title of a US soap opera comes to mind when it comes to Alan and you: The Bold and The Beautiful. In that order. :)

  17. We have red cushions here at the caravan (they came with the van) and that is my limit on bright colour - but each to his own!! It all looks lovely though and getting done at a rate of knots.

The SMEG is handsome and tall.
I was wondering about the radiators and it is a gas boiler. Being in the U.S. I didn't know about that for sure.
Getting peeks here and there, it should be glorious done with curtains and furniture. :)

    1. They ARE bright aren't they 🤣🤣

Yes, each property has a gas boiler for the radiators and hot water, called a Combi-boiler. It will be nice to start getting some furniture in next week 😃

  20. Thank you for sharing, I love seeing what you've done in your house. Blimey, Alan loves bright doesn't he?!!!! We have exchanged on a house now and will move in next week. The owners seem very minimalist and every wall but 2 is white. There is not a single plant in the garden - that will soon change 😆 🤣 😂 It always interests me how we all have such different tastes in our homes. Happy homemaking, Lynn.
