A Single Sausage ... and YouTube

I've been gradually eating my way through the contents of the fridge and freezer over the last week.

I Olio'd a few things that I knew I just didn't fancy eating anymore as I am trying to moving to a more 'real food/plant-based' diet but some of the things that don't really fall into that category I will still be eating from time to time, and Linda McCartney sausages are something I will always have a taste for.

When I found an opened pack of the Rosemary and Onion ones in the freezer with three left in it I thought I might as well just cook them all, even though I knew that two sausages on a bun are plenty enough for me for a simple lunch.

So two of the sausages onto the bun and one into a container to cool down.

And while I was chomping my way through lunch I made myself a little list of what I could do with my one remaining sausage.

'Banger and Mash' sounds quite lonely doesn't it!! 😄

This morning while I drank my first coffee of the day I watched and listened to former blogging buddy of mine and now YouTuber Jane (AKA Frugal Queen) on her YouTube channel.

This latest video was really interesting and as she listed all the 'Old Fashioned Frugal Living Tips' I mentally crossed them all off my list saying 'yep, I do that' over and over.  But this sort of thing is really needed at the moment for all the people who are suddenly realising that if they don't start saving money soon the sh*t really will hit the fan.

She has a really good channel, with her viewer and subscriber numbers rising rapidly as people are discovering it, and if you haven't been over there for a watch of her tips and tricks, meals of the week and cooking demonstrations you really should give it a try.

Anyway ... what would YOU do with one sausage?

  1. Sausage Fried Rice - used to do that regularly when the kids were smaller. One sausage would do an individual portion, backed up with some spring onion, pepper, peas .

  2. I do all of the things Jane mentions and have done all my 50 years of marriage. I would make sausage pasta mixture with any other bits of veg that are lurking-yum! Catriona

  3. I'd chop it up and put it through some pasta with whatever veggies I have in the fridge. Sautéed courgette, cherry tomatoes and sausage is a nice combo :-)

  4. Shame on me but with one sausage it would be cut up fairly small and frozen for when I need special dog treats!

    1. I wouldn't do that as these sort of sausages contain onion and dogs can't have onion, but yes if I was feeling generous any other sort might have been shared between the dogs, and Ginger ... he hates to be left out!

  5. I would introduce the lonely sausage to a hash brown, mushrooms, baked beans and tomato and have a little cooked breakfast, I have to be in a certain mood for that though and might have it for dinner. I too follow Jane on you tube, some very interesting tips and frugal advice, she used to live in our small cornish town . I do try to make do and mend but I am no seamstress so don't look too close, my favourite comfy nightie has a large hole under the arm but I have decided to leave it for extra ventilation in this weather :)

  6. I would make a couple of individual toads in the hole in a muffin tin x

  7. I regularly have just one Linda McC sausage with veg and gravy for a 'roast' dinner so that would be my choice 👍
I'm following Jane too and subscibed some time ago. She always speaks a lot of sense doesn't she. There are some great tips on there.

  8. I ate one sausage with pasta and spaghetti sauce last night with a salad and lemon meringue pie for dessert! (it was my birthday!)

  9. Chrissie and I have the same tastes 🤪. I would add a hash brown (or two), mushrooms and maybe a fried egg. Don't eat baked beans, but maybe a slice of my low carb bread . . . and a big mug of tea.

  10. Cut the sausage up in small pieces and add to mac and cheese mixture and/or add cut up sausage mixed with vegetarian baked beans and serve over toast.

  11. Honestly? If I knew there was a lonely, cooked sausage lurking in my fridge, I would snatch a nibble every time I went into the kitchen. Might even snatch some salad leaves to go with it. See, I don't have your willpower or patience - but I would be very happy!

  12. I used to buy these but found I prefer Aldi vegan sausages and they are much cheaper. I cook them in my air fryer and chop them up cover them with onion gravy and serve with mash and cabbage.

  13. One sausage means a sandwich for lunch with a smidge of homemade tomato relish. Always a special treat.

  14. Hmm, I would probably add it to some scrambled eggs along with some leftover boiled potato and onion.

    God bless.

  15. I enjoyed that vlog too - I obviously picked up an awful lot from my Mum who was a very frugal lady.
As for the sausage, I think I would mush it up with some finely grated veg - more onion and carrot, maybe, roll it into balls and have not-meatballs in a tomato sauce with pasta a bit of cheese on top and a small side salad.
(I get the Aldi ones now too, Jessica)

  16. I'd cut the sausage up into chunks, mix it with mixed leaves, cherry tomatoes, sliced peppers, red onion and cucumber, pop in a wholemeal pitta bread and drizzle with tzatziki - that's how I eat mine (but always the Cauldron sausages, the LM ones are too salty for me!)

  17. We regularly end up with two extra sausages (seeing as there are two of us). A favourite way to use them is in a risotto, with capsicum, mushrooms, peas, occasionally sun dried tomatoes if we have any, and mixed herbs. Delicious!

  18. My vote goes to a sausage sandwich, with pickle and maybe some salad leaves. Yum!

  19. I love Linda McCartney sausages!! I'd just go with another sausage sandwich and oh yes with pickle would be lovely.
