A Holiday We'll Never Forget

They say when you hear of a death or something equally shocking you will always remember exactly where you were and what you were doing.

I was wallpapering my shop walls when I heard on the radio that Diana, Princess of Wales had died, I was sorting through a delivery in the upstairs stockroom of the Scope charity shop when the Twin Towers went down ... and when the news broke that our beloved Queen had died we were sat waiting for our evening meal to be brought to the table before going into the show lounge to watch ' A Tribute to Queen' ... the group not her Majesty.

Of course, the show was cancelled, and all entertainment stopped for the evening.  The staff all changed into black dresses and suits and the huge screens all over the hotel showed the news until the last guest departed for their rooms.  We sat quietly drinking our wine, both deep in thought at times and reminiscing at others.

Such a sad end to what was a lovely holiday.

Each day had started with a lovely breakfast.

We had a game or two of giant chess in the gardens, then puzzles in the lounge.  Alan enjoyed the swimming pool and steam room every day over in the Spa, and I got lots of reading done.  We took part in some of the quizzes in the afternoons and generally relaxed and enjoyed ourselves.

We went out to an Antiques Centre one day and Alan enjoyed a cream scone, oh he does enjoy a good cream scone. 😄

I decided on something more tangible than a cake, although I did enjoy a coffee while he chomped away.  I bought this lovely butter knife and three 1930's Solian-ware Soho Pottery plates as my treat for the day.

The rest of my holiday 'souvenirs'.

Half used toiletries, excess sachets and napkins ... and an apple and a banana that we took one day for a snack and never got around to eating.  The VIP cards and the stars were left on our table each night to show that we had the VIP package and get us a drink of our choosing from the bar free of charge.  On the last night with the sad news of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II we drank our bottle of wine to toast her life but decided that any extra drink would just be too much.  Instead, they are souvenirs of a lovely holiday ... but one that will always be tinged with loss.

RIP Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

  1. Sounds like a wonderful holiday apart obviously the sad news about the queen. The plates are beautiful. I always come home with sachets and toiletries as well, after all we are paying for them. x

    1. It was a really good holiday, and everything was handled really well by all the staff at the hotel when the awful news landed. All the toiletries were half used so they had to be taken, the only cheeky things to take really were the hot chocolates etc but they will come in really handy for our next little break when that sort of thing will not be available.

    1. She was a beautiful lady, and obviously led the nations fashion choices back in the day as my Mum looks just like her on all her wedding photographs.

  3. A memorable holiday, but sadly in more ways than one. I think it was the suddenness of it which was such a shock. Two days before she had been still "in harness". As a confirmed Royalist, I really feel her loss - she and Prince Philip were in the background my entire life. Hearing "God Save the King" sung now seems very strange.

Glad you had a lovely time away otherwise, and what pretty china.

    1. She looked so frail after her meetings with the Prime Ministers, I really felt for her. Yes, we have known no other ruler have we, it will be very strange.

  5. So glad you enjoyed your holiday. Alan looks very happy with the food!
It was certainly a shock on hearing that our beloved Queen had passed so suddenly but she looked so frail pictured with Liz Truss on Tuesday. She will be sorely missed.

Your plates are beautiful, Sue, and you have brought back all the kinds of things that G brings back from a Warner holiday 😂

    1. Alan was thrilled with his foodie holiday. A full cooked breakfast every morning, a cake and coffee at lunch times and then a three-course meal with a bottle of wine every night. I'm amazed I only put on one pound in weight. Perhaps walking the long corridors over and over helped keep my weight down. ;-)

I highly recommend Warner Holidays for sure.

  9. We too we’re on holiday when the sad news broke. As you say, it’s another time when we’ll always remember where we were. I recall my mum was ironing and I was reading Bunty when a newsflash came on TV to say that President Kennedy had been shot.

    1. These events are really fixed to where we were and what we were doing aren't they. It's good to have that timeline, and it shows how shocked we were at the things that happened.
