Reaching for the Light ... and My Results for Mum

My spider plant loves it on top of the larder cupboard and really reaches for the light from the Velux window.  I wish I could reach up so high but even watering this is now out of question and once every two weeks I ask Alan to lift it down and give it a drink.   I could of course move it somewhere lower, but it loves it's new position so it can stay reaching for the light as long as it's happy.

Google image.

And the reason I can't reach upwards is my back.

I promised my Mum I would post pictures showing the results of my MRI scan on Sunday so here is a Google image that I have added  circles to to show where the fractures and nerve impingements are.  This first image shows the original fracture that showed up on the X-ray a couple of weeks ago in red and the original painful area from back in May when all this trouble started circled in green.

And here is the updated version with the original T12 fracture circled in red as it is classed as severe, then there are three other fractures that showed up on the MRI and classed by the radiologist and the MSK team as mild to moderate.

The two red stars are at L5 (original injury) and L1 and these are nerve impingements.

I have now been told to wait to be contacted by the Spinal Care team at The Royal Preston Hospital, so I will keep you ... and my Mum ... informed as soon as I have any more treatments news.

This blog post will self-destruct in one week .... I hate medical stuff

  1. Blimey Sue, no wonder you're in agony - all those fractures!! I've been in enough pain and I've only got a prolapsed disc, your agony certainly puts mine into perspective. Thanks for the pictures, very informative, I can now see exactly where my offending discs are!

I hope you hear (and get treatment) very soon, you've been suffering too long. xx

    1. You can pick up a copy of the spine picture from Google Images, then you can have fun adding your own circles. 😃🤣

  2. Goodness me no wonder you are in pain. Do they know what is causing them? Hope you can get ‘sorted’ out somehow. Back brace? I know someone years ago had this problem and she had a rather gorgeous corset made. Apparently helped no end.

    1. I have a DEXA scan appointment in December to check for osteoporosis as it runs in the family. At the moment I'm in more pain if I wear any sort of support unfortunately, and the Dr has said normal movement is best so the breaks heal in more natural position.

  3. Goodness - no wonder you have been in so much pain with problems in so many areas. I can't imagine how any fracture could be classed as mild! Do you know how it all started?

I hope you get the referral really quickly

    1. Possibly stress fractures or osteoporosis. A fracture is classed as mild to moderate if it's still in it's original position, just broken.

  4. It just sounds so painful and difficult for you at the moment. ((( hugs )))

Love the spider plant though - and its babies.

    1. Painful for sure, gentle hugs are good 🤗❤️🤗

She's really healthy isn't she, the first lot of babies are in a cup of water waiting to be repotted, this is the next generation. 😃

  5. That all sounds rather nasty. Do you know what treatment is in the offing for you? How did you do it in the first place, do you think? Just as well you don't have the smallholding to cope with these days as you just wouldn't have been able to cope.

Your spider plant looks a happy chappy. We have some plants on a broad south-facing windowsill to overwinter, and the big Colocasia was cut back and put in a small pot to dry out for the winter - and has started to grow again indoors. We will enjoy that and it is now houses by the Door to Nowhere.

    1. The possible treatment is Kyphoplasty, but I need to hear what the Spinal Care consultant says. Possibly caused by osteoporosis and/or years of heavy lifting.

  7. I'm sorry for your back troubles. That certainly does look like it would be painful. I hope they have a solution that will work well so that you can get back to your normal life again.

  8. Yowza. Certainly explains the enormous amount of pain you are suffering. Now...on to some way of getting you back in the comfort zone...i.e. minimal pain.

I have osteoporosis so try not to put myself in situations that might aggravate it. Of course, it aggravates me not to be able to do things I used to do, but since I'm in my eighth decade I must adjust my expectations. Whether I do it graciously--or not--depends on the day. :) Have another Dexa scan on Monday so will see where things stand. Hoping you will soon get treatment to relieve your pain.

    1. Finding a 'comfort zone' would be a brilliant starting point 😬

Good luck with your scan on Monday. Xx

  9. Oh Sue, I'm so sorry about your back!! :-( I shattered my L-1 vertebrae and bulged the disc between L-4 & 5 back in early 2016, when I picked up the end of a piano (which contained a cast iron plate... a BIG cast iron plate... hundreds of pounds). I was in horrific pain for weeks & couldn't bend at the waist for 16 weeks (have you ever tried to spit out toothpaste standing straight up?! *gawd*). Anyway, because of that traumatic break, I developed Type II diabetes. Yes, you can indeed develop diabetes from a body trauma... loads of folks admitted into the hospital for COVID came out with Type II diabetes they didn't get admitted with. So I fully understand your pain and have sympathy for you. Take good care~ Andrea xoxoxo

    1. OUCH!! Now that sounds horrendous, poor you. I have had a couple of mishaps with toothpaste, I didn't really cotton on to the fact that it was because I was too upright!!

Yes, the human body does seem to develop more illnesses linked to the first unfortunately. My blood pressure is currently through the roof. 😟

  10. The charts certainly highlight how bad your pain must be Sue. I really do feel for you. I had to Google kyphoplasty as I've never heard of it before. Wishing you good luck with successful treatment and sending gentle hugs. Are you managing a doggy walk or is it too painful? 🤔

    1. Snap ... Google has com in very handy just recently. 😃

On a good morning I can manage to get about 100 yards along the canal and back, luckily Suky is more than happy with this. Mavis and Alan carry on through to town and back.

  11. Oh Sue, that looks so painful! At least now they know exactly what and where it is so it can be treated properly. I'm sending you lots of healing thoughts and gentle hugs!

  12. Oh my, that looks like it would be very painful. No wonder why you are hurting so much. I do hope they can treat this so you are pain free.

    God bless.

  13. I had to look up Kyphoplasty... Isn't it amazing what modern medicine can do! A generation ago you would just have to put up with it, and two or three generations ago you'd likely be dead by our age!! I tell myself that frequently. During winter a fortnightly watering for your Spider Plant is probably doing it good. And by next summer I hope you'll be fully mobile again. You do need to keep speaking in a LOUD voice about your pain level. "The squealing wheel gets the oil" and all that. I do hope there's relief for you very soon. ((#)) that's a very, very gentle hug.

  14. Oh you poor darling. You cannot undo your years of hard work and heavy lifting, but is there anything that can be done to slow the progression of the osteoporosis?

    1. There are medications available once I have had confirmation that I have it. Mum's been on tablets for years.

  15. Ouch I know that hurts! I have blown discs L3 and L4. We're paying now for all the hard work in our younger days when we thought we could do it all.

    Love your spider plant.

  16. I'm hoping now the experts know exactly what they are dealing with that it's won't be too long before you are pain free again♥ xoxo
