Do I Still Do the Things?

The fridge is fuller after a weekend shopping trip you can stop worrying about me now  😉

Someone asked me the other day if I still do 'the things that I used to do'.

The short answer is Yes.

I still drink my coffee black, still eat the same foods, in this case yellow stickered strawberries with my morning Weetabix.

I still pick up the unused sachets etc if we eat out and don't use all the condiments.  This was from a couple of weeks ago.

And this from yesterday.

If we need anything from Dunelm ... and this week I needed a Winter-weight duvet for my bed ... we tend to go first thing on a Sunday morning.  Before getting our shopping we usually treat ourselves to a coffee in the café and for the last few months you have been able to buy a bacon bun for just a pound with each cup of coffee.  Now obviously I don't eat bacon but we still take advantage of the offer and get one each,  Alan then moves the four slices of bacon from one bun and adds them all to the other.  Meaning he is getting a well filled bun and a lot less carbs, which is the best thing for a diabetic.

Well you know me rather than seeing a bread roll go to waste I scoop it up along with any other condiments and take it home wrapped in a poly bag if I've remembered or a serviette if I haven't.  I usually have a couple of twin packs of Lotus Biscoff biscuits in my bag so I have them with my coffee.

Yesterday we called to Aldi on the way back for a bit of shopping so I treated myself to a tube of Stackers, their version of Pringles, to go with the bun.  Which once home was filled with cheese, spring onion, mayo and iceberg lettuce.  It was a lovely lunch eaten while watching back to back episodes of Martin Clunes in Manhunt, series two.  Gripping stuff for a Sunday afternoon.

So the answer to the question is most definintely yes I still do all the things I have always done, eat the mostly the same things, buy yellow stickered bargains when I see them, pick up the spare condiments and binge watch pre-recorded programmes on the television so I can whizz through the adverts and not have to wait until the next day or week to see the next episode.

I'm sure there's a lot more things that I 'still' do, but at the moment there are a lot of things that I can't do because of my ongoing health issues, which is very frustrating but I am working on things slowly but surely and I can see a glimmer of light at the end of this long tunnel.

  1. It looks like you've got a nice variety of goodies in your lovely new fridge! I'm so sorry you are still having health problems but hopefully you are able to enjoy your wonderful new home. It all looks so relaxing and comfy. Even a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel is better than none. Take care Sue!

    1. I do tend to eat mainly from the fridge so it runs down quickly. But I make large portions of things and then put the extra portions or leftovers in there, so the cupboard stocks do go down ... but very slowly 😀

  2. I'm glad you've got a cozy place, your animals and can get out when you need to. All of that helps make dealing with your health easier. I hope you continue to feel better.

    God bless.

    1. I'm afraid there's little chance of you seeing me out and about at the moment, I haven't been able to walk the dogs for months ... or get to Cobblers ☹️

  5. It seems a lot of us our interested in the contents of fridges and larders and other people's menu choices, I know I am and I have picked up some handy tips and ideas along the way. I have always tried to be frugal with my shopping but after being really poorly lately I have reviewed my eating habits in an effort to lose weight from my weeble like body I have been buying a weekly organic veg and fruit box, it seems a lot but I found we could afford it especially if I cut out the vegan faux meats and replace quantity with quality, this growing older business can throw all sorts of unwelcome things our way but it is better than the alternative, I wish you well in your recovery and brighter things to come, Chrissie.

    1. We really are aren't we. My most viewed posts and photos in all my blogs are the ones showing the inside of cupboards or fridges etc. Food porn 🤣

Aw ... your 'weeble like body', at least it gets you around. Growing old sucks, but it's better with good health. I'm a stone down now and working on losing the next one 🤞

    2. Wow, a stone can make such a difference , it's not easy is it although as you have been so poorly with your back hopefully it should go towards making things a little better, I do hope so but then again if yo have not been very mobile food can be a comfort through boredom and frustration. If I wore a hat I would take it off to you, I have over 7 stone to lose ,you would think that being vegan I would be fit, slim and healthy but there are so many meat free treats and delicious vegan pasties etc and of course chips, oh how love chips and I am weak willed. Good luck with the next stone and with your road to recovery, thank goodness you moved to your new home when you did, it seems the perfect situation for you.

  6. I am sorry you have had so much pain and trouble with your back and your health. It gets frustrating to wait but you are doing the right thing and taking your time. Glad to hear that you are making some progress and hope you continue to improve a bit more each day!

    1. It's hard when you're dairy intolerant and virtually every tablet has lactose in. Immediate side effects from that and then the actual side effects kick in, every bloody time. ☹️

    2. My daughter is dairy and gluten intolerant and I know what you mean! You have to pay such close attention to every little thing you come across! It is tiring to have to remain so vigilant! Take good care of YOU! :)

  7. Very glad you can see a glimmer of light...hope it beams on you very soon. I'm glad to see you are keeping up your frugal standards, and love your healthy take on the bacon bun. Hope you have the energy for another 'challenge' soon! You have inspired me to have a go, though it's a bit tricky as i have to feed my 93 year old Mom, too.

    3. Haha, I think not, he's into everything meaty at the moment. We rarely share food.

  8. I must admit to sneaking out some brown sugar satchets from a cafe or two the other day. We don't have sugar in our drinks and I don't keep any at all at the caravan (have some at home for baking and when other people call) so when I came to make the apple and blackberry crumble at the van I was able to use one of the little satchets and it was just enough for us as we like it quite tart. I will probably be seen collecting more of these satchets when the assistant asks if we want sugar I'll probably say yes now. Maybe I could even collect enough to make a cake LOL!
Hope the back getting easier. We go home tomorrow I'll wave from the M6 as usual as we pass Garstang!

    1. I came to the conclusion the other year that I was more than entitled to have a couple of sugar sachets each time I have a coffee out. As a black coffee drinker I must make a lot more profit for the shops I frequent, so a sugar or two is allowable. 😀

At Dunelm they give you the sachets they think you will need and any unused items get thrown away due to Covid regulations, so taking the leftovers home is vital in my book. I even take unused serviettes with me now to use at home. I hate waste.

  9. Your refrigerator interior is so clean and spacious looking. I think mine needs a neatening up. You have some clever tips for bargains and not wasting food.

    1. It seems so easy to keep it spacious looking after having such a small space in the last one. A quick wipe out just before restocking each week or so is all it needs.

  10. One frugal habit I learned from you is that of buying whole milk and adding the same amount of water, which equals semi-skimmed milk; one in the fridge and one in the freezer. Passed it on to several friends as well, so thank you from all of us! I don't know if it's all across the country, but round here, the price of 4 pints of milk has gone up from £1.05 to £1.15. I don't mind if the farmer gets the increase, but I wonder if that is the case. Hmmmm . . . .

    1. I don't buy milk anymore, except for my long life almond milk, so I've not really kept up to date with prices ... but as you say I doubt the farmer gets much, if any of the increase. I did notice last time we shopped that Aldi's own brand of mayo has gone up 10p a squeezy bottle, that is some price hike!!

  11. I find it surprising that you eat the bread roll from Dunelm as it's had bacon on it!
As a vegan, how can you bring yourself to do this, even in the name of frugality?

    1. I'm a non-meat eating, dairy intolerant person and I have no qualms about eating a bread roll that has no butter or spread on it and has only held some slices of dry crispy bacon for a couple of minutes ... not that I think you have any reason to judge my diet or call me out on my own choices!!

  12. Hi Sue, I haven't visited blog land for ages, good for you, you are entitled to make your own choices without being judged.
I am a girl like you would do exactly the same, when we have coffee Ron takes it I don't but I still take a few extra to take home, I am entitled to it for buying a drink. Same with sauces, food places factor this into the price of meals and drinks. xx
