Meanwhile Out in the Garden

Alan bought himself an early Christmas present yesterday.

He's always loved feeding the wild birds but back in Wales we had no reason to put out fat balls or bird feeders with seeds or peanuts as all the local wildlife just mucked in with the chickens eating all of the mentioned directly from Chicken World.  Now with our own little town garden we are slowly making it more wildlife friendly and getting in supplies for the little birdies seemed a good step.

We already have the little drinkers for the birds and the old stainless steel sink from the kitchen as a pond ... and of course they have the canal just over the fence ... so food for the birds was the next logical step now that Winter is almost upon us.

Obviously we will have to keep an eye on Ginger as those little platforms temporarily holding fat balls ... put there to discourage him ... just look like little cat platforms to me!!  I honestly thought it would take a month or so for the birds to find this and be comfortable feeding from it, and with the washing hanging outside yesterday wafting in the breeze I thought this would put them off too, but by last night half of one of the fat balls was gone ... I'm just waiting to see if a seagull will carry one off  😄

Round the corner the little shed and the raised bed have settled in nicely ...

... and something that has really surprised me is how happy this Spider plant is outside.  I was going to bring it in yesterday but it is the healthiest it's ever looked and it's been out there since the shed was finished.

I'll keep an eye on it and probably bring it in at the first frost, unfortunately it will have to go into Alan's as I have no more room for plants here ... so that will sound it's death knell then!!

  1. Oh how darling, Sue! Yes, out in the country the raccoons & other critters would have this dismantled in a heartbeat. I could never have something like this... but maybe someday, when we move into town too. ~Andrea xoxoxo

  2. The rustic bird feeder looks great. We've just put ours up in the new garden and already we've had a little robin feeding from the tray. Unfortunately, we also have a grey squirrel called Sammy so he'll probably be helping to eat the bird food too :(

    1. It's been there since we took it out of the lodge and started organising the garden, it had a leaky plug at first but now it's holding water 😀

  4. It's looking great. Mind if I ask the tin tub things on the wall above the plant what are they for please or are they just decoration? Thx

    1. I have always used them when I'm potting up plants to hold compost mixes or when I'm weeding. I got them in a farm sale many years ago when we were on our first farm ... they had to come with us 😃

    3. Will you be growing food this coming year (on a smaller scale obviously)? My basil is doing quite well and my chilli's are growing that'll be the 3rd lot I've had off this plant 😊 I also used some soil compost from my garden to replant my basil into a bigger tub and I think some tomato seeds must of been dormant coz now there growing 😆

    4. Yes, that new wooden bed is to be my main food growing area. Against the wall of the annexe will be a few pots and possibly bags with potatoes etc in them. So still growing but on a much smaller scale. 😀

    5. That's nice
I'm sure you'll find great enjoyment in your more simplified way of life. Growing food on a smaller scale I'm sure will be more relaxing 😊

  7. I like that bird feeder - it is like a rustic sculpture for the garden! So are you in a two-flat with Alan above you so you can share the garden? I can't seem to figure out the setup! Seems to be working well, tho!

    1. Alan lives in the three storey house and I live in the attached annexe. It was fully documented on here from buying and renovating to moving in. It works extremely well.

  8. What a lovely little spot - I'm sure the birds will love it!
My kitchen window looks out onto a conservation area and it is wonderful to watch the birds and the squirrels - plus - during lockdown when walking was the one activity we could do, I became quite an enthusiastic bird watcher!

  9. Hopefully Ginger won't be interested in the bird feeder or the birds. Your little town garden is looking fabulous♥ Our spider plant has gone nuts with so so many babies:(
