October is Here

Wow, October is here already ... how the bloody hell did that happen?

If one more person asks me what I'm doing for Christmas I'll scream!!
(And YES that includes YOU Alan 👉)

Summer is almost completely packed away here, although there has been some preparation for next year to lighten my mood and give me the hope of actually doing some growing once again.  My posh new raised bed was built last weekend and was filled with the compost and manure that we already had waiting and there are three more bags to top it up to the top with in Alan's car boot.  These will just be placed on top as they are so that all the nutrients don't get washed away by a Winters worth of rain.

There has been some homegrown food this year thank goodness, our little apple tree gave us three apples, which were very unexpected considering the transplanting and waiting around in it's pot for so long, but very welcome.  Alan had two of them and made a pie and I have this one in my fridge.  And we have had a constant stream of Courgettes from the three plants I grew in pots while we were still at the flat and transplanted into the flower bed when we moved here ... oh and a couple of marrows when we didn't spot a courgette in time for it to qualify as such!!

It's a good job we have something homegrown as my fridge is a bare and desolate waste ground at the moment, that's what happens when you get used to living with a tiny fridge and suddenly you have SPACE to expand your horizons.

Don't worry it will be filled once I go shopping ... and you know I have a bit of a larder of tins and dried food  😉

  1. Your 'growing corner' looks absolutely fantastic. What will you grow in the posh bed?

    1. I'm thinking mostly salad leaves, radish and spring onions, with perhaps a couple of tomato plants and a cucumber at the back growing up the fence.

  2. We have our eldest daughter living with us so our fridge is crammed with cans of unusual beers and things like olives, jars of ingredients I wouldn't use and Halloumi cheese which doesn't appear on my shopping list! I guess one gets stuck in a cooking time warp as one gets older!

    1. Definitely, I really have to make an effort to buy something new occasionally, otherwise my shopping would be the same week in week out.

  3. The new bed and the She Shed look quite marvellous and I suspect the growing area will be enhanced by lots of pots next year too. My fridge looks a bit like yours - really must stock up on veg this afternoon. Aren't we lucky to be able to?

  4. Love the shed - I wouldn't be without mine. My fridge here in the caravan is groaning as we tend to stock up for quite a few days when we go into town as it is almost 20 miles away. We do try and support the little village shop but he doesn't have the choice and his prices are quite a lot dearer.

  5. I think I am in a food rut now. I've started looking for some new recipes and I am attempting one per week. Have a good weekend.

  7. I’m with you Sue … in that I can’t quite understand how we are in October already 🙈

  8. Your potting shed looks posh enough to be the entrance to your home! As for October...can it really be? Nothing to beat home-grown courgettes; you can pick them before they become the young marrows you find in the shops!

  9. Your shed and raised bed are excellent and perfect for that space. You have been busy which I hope means that your back is feeling better. I agree with you that the year is zooming by...but I do love October for its lovely colors and color temps.

  10. Those hanging containers on your shed remind me of my Nanna's tin bath that used to be outside all week before being brought in for the family to use for the weekly hot water dip. It was the first half of the last century though!

  11. I really do have shed envy Sue. It looks amazing. What a posh shed!! You have done a wonderful job with the whole of your new 'lodge'.
Hope you will be very happy in your new abode and Alan in his new house.

  12. Holy toledo... that refrigerator looks like it belongs to Old Mother Hubbard, whose cupboard was bare!! *haha* Everything's too neat & tidy at your house, girl... you need to do a little homesteadin' to mess things up a bit. Do some grinding and planting and kneading and mixing and slopping and dicing and storing and... and... and.... get to living!! :-) ~Andrea xoxoxo
