Of Narrowboats, Seeds and YouTube

It may look a bit gloomy, but it's just early in the morning, the world is barely awake but it's nice to be out walking the tow path with only the sounds of the birds singing as my soundtrack.  The crunch of my feet on the soggy gravel barely disturbing anyone.

I love narrowboats and we always get a few different ones to wander past.  It's hard not to look into the windows as you pass, but you can look in the direction of the boats when the curtains are closed without feeling too guilty.

I was desperate to plant some seeds the other day, although I know it's still a smidge too early for me here in Lancashire.  So I quieted the urge by planting two Courgette seeds in a pot.  They sit on my windowsill with their plant pot encased in a reused polythene bag.  Their own tiny greenhouse.

The hope of things to come. 💚

Some Weekend Watching, just a few of my favourites from this week.

Freakin Frugal.   Frugal Daddy in the dumpster again.  I find it so sad that supermarkets throw so much perfectly good food away, and even more sad that animals have lost their lives only for their flesh to end up in landfill.  Happily they rescue a tiny portion of it, and share it with neighbours and others.

Never Too Small.  An apartment with the same square footage as my little lodge.  It's always interesting to see such different layouts to mine and what people have done with them.

Gittemary Johansen.  Zero waste shopping in Denmark with the original sustainable badass vegan.

And finally:

What's for Tea.  Meals of the week from Cheryl in Scotland ... why are other people meals so much more interesting to look at than your own?

If the rain stays away today I'll be sorting out my tiny garden ready for a Summer of food growing.  Just a little bit in the raised beds and lots of pots, but just a little bit is better than none.

Hope you have a great weekend.

  1. I used to love the very early morning walk when it could feel as if the only people awake were Daisy and me, and we had the river bank here to ourselves.
I did like seeing how many books "Never Too Small" fitted into the apartment without it looking weird (and the old roof supports which they left visible).
    Have a lovely weekend, x

    1. It's a very good way to come to life in the morning isn't it a calm walk beside water. It would have been nice to have a dog with me but they were all tucked up and fast asleep next door, human and animals alike.

Yes, even in a tiny space you can always squeeze lots of books in, in fact it's your duty to try ... well that's what I told myself anyway. ;-)

Such a lovely place to walk. xx

    1. I do love the canal, it's almost as good as living by the river. At least now I have the boats to watch and not just the ducks. :-)

  3. What a lovely walk, the description of your feet on the crunchy gravel is really evocative.
Jon's just planted a few seeds, it's all very exciting. xxx

    1. It's a good time of year for us growers for sure.

  4. It is a mindset, isn't it? A simple look around at what is there, and making the most of it, whether it is your home space, the community you live in or the food that you have in your kitchen. Look at what is there, and make the best use of it. I don't know if I ever connected it before. Thank you.

    1. Once you make that connection it stays with you forever. We are all so lucky with what we have. xx

    1. I love being near the water and I love the boats. YouTube is a good place if you pick and choose wisely.

  6. It's so nice to have a quiet walk all alone. I miss the canal walk close to the park home we used to have. It's not the same pounding the streets.
Thanks for the links, Sue, I'll take a look later :)

    1. Being by the water is good, but there's lots to notice pounding the streets too. I am always amazed by what I see when I am able to walk slowly through town.

  7. Thanks so much for the interesting videos. It is always good to see/read how someone is tackling the waste free challenge of grocery shopping. Thankfully, a home garden and farmer's markets make it easier in the summer. Phillis, Columbia, TN

    1. Waste free is a real challenge at the moment isn't it, everything seems so overly packaged. I'm afraid shopping at Aldi as often as I have done recently has meant I have had far too much packaging and I hope to remedy that from now on. Gittemary is a very good role model.

  8. Both Harvey and I are disgusted with the waste.... Why didn't they donate to the nearest Food Bank. It is gross how much we waste.

    God bless.

    1. That's always the first thing on my mind. When Amy and Dwayne take things to their local soup kitchen they are always so happy to receive it.
I'm glad they share out what they save from the dumpsters with their neighbours, in fact on 'good haul days' they have started sending text messages to the people they know will enjoy what they have found.

  9. Unfortunately, despite the fact that we are frequently told that we should check food by smelling it, and looking at it, rather than relying on best before date, food banks refused to take anything which is out of date, and late in the evening. That includes foods that add the current days date on.

    1. It is sad that they have those rules, although slightly understandable. Unfortunately, a very good percentage of what Frugal Mommy and Daddy find are well within date and would be suitable for the shops that they rescue the food from to pass on to Food Banks or soup kitchens ... I guess it's just easier and quicker to throw it away.
