Never Shop on an Empty Stomach

I try to keep things simple here at the Van.

A big jar of pasta  on the worktop, a couple of onions in the fridge and tins of tomatoes, pulses etc in the cupboard means I always have the makings of a meal.  I don't need much, I prefer to eat simply.  But then every now and then I go and have a blip.

I went shopping before I had eaten any breakfast yesterday ... BIG MISTAKE!!

Now my fridge looks like this  ...

... and just as I was making headway eating through the contents of the cupboard,  it once again is full to busting.

I won't need to go shopping for a while, but when I do it will not be on an empty stomach 🀣🀣🀣

  1. It's just too easily done, isn't it? Never mind, you will use it all.

    1. I just wandered round willy nilly chucking literally everything I wanted to eat AT THAT MOMENT into my trolley ... and somehow it was all joined by Nigel Slater's latest book. 🀣🀣

  2. On the plus side, you won't have to go shopping for a while :)

  3. I'm more impressed that you managed to go shopping before breakfast! I need coffee, breakfast and more coffee before doing anything.

    1. I don't like leaving the dogs in the Van on their own for too long when it's so hot. Even with the windows on the catch and half the curtains closed it still seems stuffy. So I go out early if I can πŸ˜ƒ

  4. I try not to go shopping on an empty stomach. Everything is so much more tempting when your hungry.

  5. It's lethal, I usually end up with jam doughnuts if I'm shopping when hungry!

  6. Not an empty stomach - and not a full one.I went shopping just after I had had lunch and didn't even get all the things on my list. Not hungry so no food bought :-D

    1. Haha ... yes I'm exactly the same. No inclination to buy ANY food if I've just eaten. I've been known to go out on a full stomach and come back with new jeans and t shirts instead 🀣🀣

  7. Easily done I should know, I left the car this morning and just got the 4 things I needed, which was very good for me.
    Have a good weekend.

  8. I walk to the shop or take my bike, that way I stay on track.

  9. I'm afraid I'm one of these old biddies who liked to keep a well-stocked store-cupboard, as we have learned to our cost that sometimes the Welsh weather can chuck googlies which catch you out. I keep a shopping list on the back of the kitchen door and when I am using the "spare"of anything, or getting low on tinned foods, they get added to the list.

I try not to shop when hungry though, as like Sue in Suffolk, something toothsome ends up in the trolley!

  11. Oh how I can relate to this! Sometimes I get on a Fresh Food binge to where I buy too many perishables to possible eat before... they perish!

    1. I've done that before now, but usually I rescue the perishables by either freezing or turning them into another dish ready for freezing. I never throw food away πŸ™‚

  12. I can definitely relate to this. I have now taken to having some yogurt before I head to the stores.

    God bless.

  13. I don't think you should "beat yourself up" about this - you will eat everything, and you will probably spend less in the long run by not going out again for at least a week πŸ˜‹ .

I am the same as Bovey Belle, I do a massive shop as infrequently as I can get away with, if we didn't eat so much fresh veg & salad I could probably manage to only shop every three weeks (milk goes in the freezer and brought out when needed). But one or other of us goes out at least once a week to stock up on greenery. Yes, I "ought" to grow my own. But I don't.

    1. Oh don't worry I never beat myself up about anything, I'm more of a WTF!! type of person, and soon get over things ... after giving myself a good swearing at :-)

Yes, it's only the fresh things that I need to go out for, if Alan's not around I don't even need to go out for milk as I buy long life almond milk and always have a few in the cupboard.

  14. Always my problem...over shopping on the food front, but I never waste a thing
