Suky ... in Her Jacket

'Come on Mum ... it's time to walk!!'

I don't know how dogs do it, their poor little paws on the icy paths and grass, but one thing I do know is that Suky has now learned to love her little cosy jacket.

She trots happily along in it and does what she needs to do while we are out without any problems.  A far cry from the first few times she wore it and walked coffee table leg style, with all four legs rigid as could be.  She refused point blank to go up and down any edgings or steps and would not have a wee at all.

Now suddenly she seems to realise the warmth difference between coat and no-coat, and on a cold or wet day is happy to wait while I put it on before venturing down the steps and into the big wide world.

And need it she did today, it's an icy white wonderland out there, we just did half the riverbank walk and cut through towards the High Street half way along.  I just couldn't bear the thought of those poor little doggy paws getting any colder.

She had a good mooch around, a little trot, met a few other dogs to say 'hello' to, sniffed all the important corners and posts and then we headed for home.  She's now fast asleep in her bed, feet thawing out ... and from the sound effects coming from her direction she's feeling very good after our little dose of fresh air.

Me?  Oh I'm just thankful for a nice steaming mug of coffee and a bowl of hot porridge, and at least my feet were warm with thick tights and thermal socks to keep them warm in my wellies.

  1. Thinking of dogs walking in the cold... I was watching the birds feeding yesterday. It's delightful to watch but it did strike me that in this weather they're pecking away at the nuts and fatballs for dear life. Winter must be thoroughly dreadful if you're a non-human wild creature.

    1. Yes, there was a Mrs Blackbird pecking around in the grass on the edge of the river and I stood watching her for a minute or two, it must be so hard for them. I think next time I go out I will have a bag of mixed seeds and crushed nuts in my pocket in case I see something else rooting around for food. At least here they don't go without water as there are branches right across and in the river so that even the littlest bird could perch on and drink from.

  2. You could buy her little boots. That would probably have her walking funny for a while ;)

  4. Suky looks very happy doesn't she. Re the birds, we have a lovely little Robin which has begun to visit our garden regularly and he/she does love the fat bits and mealworm food which we put on the feeding dish. The water dish is frozen solid each day so I make sure I remove the ice and top up the water. Winter is indeed hard for wildlife at times.

  5. Benji was exactly the same when I bought him a waterproof coat with a blanket lining - walked strangely, wouldn't wee or poo, infact I had to remove the coat so that he would 'perform' before turning for home. Just like Suky, he now appreciates that it keeps the chill off.
For several days I have been removing the solid ice from the bird-bath and refilling with fresh water, but the ice has stayed solid on the ground all day - and this is in CORNWALL!!! Brrrr!

  6. Bertie hates anything on him, blankets coats etc. His fur coat is made up of 2 parts, so he doesn't feel the cold. He would much rather be outside in the winter than summer. Suky looks great in the coat

  7. Tess never got used to her jacket but she did have a thick rough coat so maybe she didn't need it.

  12. Suky looks quite lovely in her coat. Here in Canada you can purchase boots for your pet. Not too sure how well they stay on though.

    God bless.

  14. I have measured up my dog for a fleecy set of covering that includes back, sides, legs and underneath his chest. It will have 'space' for the toilet areas. I wish I had put the order in earlier - snow today Friday. The brochure looks as it the dogs are wearing combinations.

  15. Sue, I closed my old blog last years due to persistent trolling, I have a new one which has been running for a while. I reconnected with your blog thanks to Bears Mum. You have had a bit of a year of up heavel, I hope that it will all be over soon and you will have sold your house and moved into your new bungalow. I well remember making you some kitchen stuff to go with your kitchen when you moved into the Welsh house. I hope 2021 is a good year for you.

    1. Is there a way for me to get to your new blog, or is it private? I have no idea who Bears Mum is!!

Yes, it's been a manic year on so many levels, we have just had an offer on the house, but it's a very cheeky offer and we have said no. Yes I still have my pot holder and table mats, the pot holder here in the flat and the mats are back in Wales I think. I am not moving into a bungalow.

      All the best for 2021.
