Shopping for Gifts, Temptation

This weeks spending = £4 for the Radio Times and £3.80 for ten eggs.

I wasn't going to buy any more eggs, but then I changed my mind at the last minute while we were in Booths buying some gifts for someone.

So that's another £7.80 spent of this years cash.

After writing that I am now beginning to slightly regret buying them.  I don't really need them when I have so much more food in the house ... and that is why staying away from the shops is the best idea for me.  Happily my Radio Times subscription begins this week, so it will be coming through the letterbox and I can avoid the shops once more.

  1. Going in shops is dangerous isn't it - even when I (almost) stick to my list, I find a couple of other things often jump into my trolley or basket. At least the eggs will get used.

    1. It's lethal. Oh yes the eggs will get used over the next month.

  2. We pay £9.99 a month for Readly which allows us to load the App to 5 devices. This let’s 3 of us read a variety of magazines and newspapers. It is good value because it keeps me out of the shops and means I don’t buy other things eg clothes while I was in browsing ( and buying) the magazines. We started it as a stop gap during the first lockdown but at £3.33 a month each it has proven to be a real bargain and stops piles of papers and magazines building up in the house. Catriona

    1. That does sound like excellent value for money. I don't like reading on devices so the majority of my reading is actual books, or magazines when I have them. I do of course have all my Kindle books on my phone if I have a long wait somewhere, so I am never without emergency reading material. There's never a build up of papers or magazines here as once I've read something it is either passed on or recycled immediately.

  3. It's so easy to pop into the shops for one item and come away with more isn't it Sue. At least Alan can share the eggs. I know you waste nothing. I dare not venture into a supermarket again for at least a week, especially with G in tow !

  4. We all do this and the shops rely on us all doing this! I nearly bought eggs in M&S last night when I was in buying my mum a card (she likes Marks and not my homemade ones!). I did resist and came out with only the card walking swiftly past any displays - problem is I only have one egg (thought I had two left in the box - so not enough to even bake a few buns with or make scrambled eggs - so I am regretting it in the opposite way to you and wishing I had bought half a dozen!

    1. Exactly, no wonder they have all the tempting offers and displays the minute you walk through the door. Aren't Mum's funny ... I made my Mum a lovely hamper of homemade food items once and the following year when I asked her what she wanted for Christmas she answered 'I don't know but NOT one of your hampers thank you'.

  5. Jon shares your shopping habits, he finds it impossible to go food shopping without buying something random! Looking at Helena Bonham Carter on your cover of the Radio Times had me intrigued, I've had to have a Google. I wonder if Russell T Davies's new drama will see Crossroads being repeated? It was bad enough the first time round! xxx

    1. I wouldn't be surprised if it is repeated they do seem to show some very old programmes on the tele these days ... I won't be watching it if it is. Not even for Benny and Miss Diane.

  6. Update: Little Freddie came today so I gave him the last egg - he loves a boiled egg and soldiers and ate everything but the well scraped out shell - so I was happy to use the one last egg and he was happy to eat it!

    1. Aww ... perfect, kids do love dippy eggs don't they. I hope you turned his finished egg over for him in the egg cup so he could pretend he had another. :-)

  8. I admit that every time I go into a store, I wind up with more than I went in the store for. Every. Single. Time.

  9. I feel almost indulgently greedy, with 4 dozen eggs in the fridge! Our hens are laying pretty well still, thank goodness, as eggs are about 6 dollars a dozen here. Of course, their feed has gone up about 30% over the last year, so we are probably paying close to the same for our eggs. Butter is ridiculous too. I had a digital coupon so got 2 pounds for $3.79 each, and put them in the freezer.

    1. Haha ... when we had 55 chickens we had to have a fridge specifically for the eggs. It does feel very indulgent doesn't it. Eggs are quite low stocked everywhere at the moment due to the Avian Flu outbreaks and butter is extortionate. Alan has switched from Lurpak which he used to use to the Aldi own version, which is just over half the price.

  10. Fresh eggs are freezable! I crack them open, putting the contents of one egg in one ice cube slot, freeze them, then pop the egg cubes out into a freezer bag. Thaw to room temperature to use. Google it😊

    1. Useful information thank you, but I really don't need to do this with only ten eggs in stock. Eggs keep for a long time after the Best Before date and these will all be used up over the course of the next month.
