A Case for Slow Living ... and Ultra-Processed People

... and read books in the sunshine.

I love this meme, it really resonates with me, so I thought I would share it.  I've added my little bit underneath it to remind myself to read outside for a while each day.

I started The Year of Miracles a couple of weeks ago and have dipped into it a couple of times but it's not grabbing me.  You know the way a good book does when you feel the urge to pick it up at every opportunity.  It's not that it's a bad book as I love the way it's written, so maybe it's just my mood. In fact when Miguel Barclay's new cook book arrived with a thud on the doormat last week, I downed my book immediately and read his from cover to cover instead.

So when I read Sue's post this morning and she mentioned her new book it reminded me that I bought this book a couple of weeks ago and have yet to start it.  Maybe putting down my book and starting on another will make me enjoy them both.

I wonder who will finish reading 'Ultra-Processed People' first ... my money is most definintely on Sue.  😄

  3. The book's a bit wordy so it's slow going - I may not finish it first after all!
I don't know what came over me when I clicked to buy the book but it just felt like something I needed to read quickly and the library waiting list was 120 long - that's my excuse.
I'm on the waiting list for your other book in the photo - I'll let you know how I get on - probably in August.

    1. I'm really getting into it now, it helped watching the whole of the Panorama programme on iPlayer and then watching Chris van Tulleken's YouTube videos about the subject. Hopefully I'll be able to get back to my other book after this one and give it another go.

  4. You have both got me interested in the van Tulleken book . . .

As a child I was told if I started a book I had to finish it { 🙄 🤯 }. It was so, so liberating as an adult to be able to put down a book I did not like and find an alternative which was worth my valuable time and attention. There is no rule that says you have to read something which is not engaging with you.

With fiction, if I do not care about the personality and fate of the main characters by the end of the first chapter it's gone!

    1. Luckily I was never pushed to read as a child. My love of books started very early just because I walked to the library with my Dad so we could spend time together (and to give my Mum a break no doubt) and I was allowed to browse the four children's shelves in the corner of the adult library while he chose his books. This was before the children's library was opened in another room. I had read virtually all the children's books off those shelves a couple of times each, so the proper children's library with hundreds of books was like heaven to me.

Yes, fiction has to grab me straight away or I don't read through the book, and once read they are virtually always donated. I left the last couple of fiction books that I read on holiday on the coffee tables for other people to pick up in our Spanish hotel last year.

  8. That quote is lovely although the weeds are very safe in my garden and I've not made jam since A level Home Economics! Amen to reading books in the sunshine! xxx

    1. I have a pet weed just outside my French doors that is very safe, it grew all last year and is back again this year. It's little purple flowers are exquisite ... and I have even been known to water it.
