Selling from Home

We were due to do a car boot sale this weekend, but right until the night before the weather forecast was a bit hit and miss, and to be completely honest we really didn't fancy loading the truck up in the rain on the off chance that we would be able to sell the next day.

Instead, I spent a couple of hours photographing and listing things on Facebook Marketplace and when Saturday dawned bright and sunny it didn't matter too much that we weren't all set for the car boot sale ... we had two buyers on their way to pick up two of listed items.

You don't need another bookcase when you have half as many books, and after serving us well for a while in the garage holding lots of bits and bobs that we needed keeping off the floor, this long low bookcase ... formerly a display unit in a friends delicatessen and then a shelf in my gift shop, then a bookcase in three of our homes ... was finally destined to belong to someone else.  I think I had more than my money's worth out of it.

Also off to pastures new was our apple store we bought when we had visions of us being completely self sufficient in whole fruits for the Winter.  It never happened, what we didn't eat instead of trying to store whole we instead chopped and froze ... much less hit and miss.

In fact, this is the only apple the apple-store has ever seen.  Alan's version of 'visual merchandising'.  The store has been in regular use in the chicken shed for the past few years though, a handy set of drawers for all things 'chicken'.

So we didn't need to leave the house, the buyers came to us, gave us their money and took away the things that they wanted.  Win, win ... a good mornings work and another £60 in the coffers to go towards our Sark spending money.

Simplifying our lives is proving to be very rewarding and very satisfying.

    1. As much as anything it's the space things take up in the truck. Far better to have a hundred little items at £1 each to sell at the boot sale than one big bookcase for £30. It is good to see everything being taken away with little effort on our part 😃

  2. We were due to sell at the car boot today but the weather is looking dodgy so it will have to wait until another week, we have had some great f/book sales this week.

    1. We have the potential to do one more boot sale before the end of the season, but we have already decided that if the weather is against us we will photograph the 'stock' in job lots and sell that on Facebook Marketplace as well.

    1. It went within an hour of posting to someone that knows us, so perhaps slightly underpriced ... but after using it for more than 7 years we were more than happy with what we got 😃

    1. I loved it, and we used it well for over 12 years ... but it's no longer of use to us so it's time was up 😄

    1. It's a souvenir of a working holiday weekend that ended up with us at the Ludlow Food Festival. We might even keep it 😉

    1. It's a very safe way to sell as you can check out potential buyers via their Facebook page.

  7. We are running out of Summer to do any car boots, everytime we plan to do one it either rains or hubby gets called into work. We use Ziffit to sell books, but still have boxes and boxes to go through from when hubby had a book unit, we are now down to 5 book cases, which won't come with us when we move next, having previously got rid of 8 old ones. Your book case was lovely it looks like the top of some kind of dresser. We have 3 years to clear down as in my mind I wan't us off the moor by 2022, sooner if possible. Helen S.

    1. Our books are going down nicely. I made more selling books via Amazon than Ziffit offered me so I decided against using that. Perhaps I'll give them another go through

It was a made to order piece of furniture that my friend had made for her Deli. It used to hold jars of chutney and jams, and had taster plates if the jams with crackers on the top. When her business was struggling I bought it off her and had it upstairs in my tiny shop ... then it was full of teddy bears and lavender products. Then we switched lifestyle and it became a bookcase 😃

  8. A much easier way to do it! My OH has taken to selling off lots of our *stuff* via the local Facebook Buy and Sell page. People take a look, give us a call then come along and take it off our hands. Easy peasy.

    1. It's too bloody easy ... it's getting addictive. I've just sold two empty Fortnum and Mason Hampers 🤣🤣

  9. It certainly oats to present stuff in the best way, which of course includes clues about it's usage. I know, some people have no imagination.
