Weekend Working

Our delivery for the garden came last week and sat waiting patiently at the front of the house for Alan to get back from work.  Once he had built up the energy he unwrapped the blocks and moved them stack by stack through his house and into the garden.

On Saturday while the side of the garden where the new raised bed was going was still in the shade, he started by clearing back some of the stones and marking out the area for the new bed.  We'd both forgotten just how deep those stones go down!!

As long as you follow the detailed instructions and prepare the area, these block go together really well and quite quickly.

And with a few breaks for cool drinks, ice-lollies and then later on some lunch the whole bed was built by teatime.

I just got a photo of the new bed this morning.

We are both really pleased with it and I'm really looking forward to filling it, but first we have the small matter of a narrowboat trip to look forward to so there's no rush and it's much too warm to be lugging bags of compost and chippings around at the moment.

If you're wondering why there's a couple of saws lying on top of the bed when no saws were needed in it's construction, it's because Alan has already started on another little garden project ... something to make Ginger's life just a little bit easier!!

    1. We do always seem to have something on the go don't we, hence me needing a blog for the last 14 years to document it all for our own records ;-)

  6. Good work, the both of you! It will be nice to have a break on the narrowboat after all of that hard work. Give Alan a good back rub as it makes me ache just looking at all of those things to lug!! Enjoy your trip!

    1. He was sensible and carried it all through in smaller loads, as he already has a painful back at the moment. Thank you. xx

  8. The bed looks wonderful! What I've been trying to find out over the past year, reading back to the beginning(!) is the relationship between you and Alan. You are married but live in separate houses, is that right? How did that come about? I know it's all none of my business and please feel free to ignore this message. It's just me being curious!

    1. It does doesn't it.

I have answered this question so many times!! Yes we are married and have been together for 18 years. Alan who likes space and his own distinctive colour schemes, is in the main house, I like small spaces and am in the annexe to the main house, we both have access to the garden at the back. It came about because that is how we like it and it suits us. So many people that we meet say that they wish they had the guts to do it to when they see how well it works, and some say it would have saved them from getting divorced!!

    2. Ah, sorry to have asked this too! Couldn't find it anywhere and I was sooo curious (read: nosy, lol) This is really a very good solution! Well done you!! I just chase the husband with a broom if he decides to rearrange MY kitchen again just because he wants to boil an egg and the salt is not where he thinks it should be, hahaha!
