Moving On from the Freezer Into a Slightly Less Chilly Place

Breakfast yesterday was the last of the Warburtons Thin Bagels from the fridge ... these are really tasty by the way ... and have been delicious with butter, jam and as I had them here with peanut butter.

It made for a tasty little start to the day while I planned my next move.

The night before I had made some coleslaw with half of the remaining Iceberg lettuce, a grated carrot and some finely sliced red onion.  I used up two of the sachets of mayonnaise that I had in my sachet stash bowl ... and there was enough of everything to be able to do an action replay the next day.

It made me realise that now was the time to check all the other 'fresh' foods that I had in the fridge and use them up over the coming week.

As you can see, post-Christmas the fridge is a much emptier place ... well apart from the cheese drawer.  😁

The vegetables are all in pretty good shape, the SMEG fridge keeps fruits and vegetables really well, and of course my use of Stayfresh bags helps too.

The unopened celery, the red cabbage and the tomatoes were bought just before Christmas and the onions, carrots and other half-used bunch of celery a couple of weeks earlier.

Everything was checked over and apart from a couple of the outer leaves of the red cabbage and the bottom of it's core ... which were put into the compost bin ... everything was absolutely fine.  The drawer was washed out, dried and a clean tea towel put into the bottom and then refilled with the veggies.

The cheese and fruit drawer.

Basically with this one, I just emptied it all out washed and dried the drawer, put all the cheeses etc back in in use it up date order.  I replaced the apple and ate the Mandarin oranges, sharing a couple of segments with Mavis who absolutely loves all things tangerin-y.

Then I started to flag, so I made myself some lunch before I put the last of the mashed potatoes into the freezer as mentioned on the last post, keeping just enough out for a small Bangers and Mash lunch.

And of course Bangers and Mash needs Bisto gravy.

Two Linda McCartney Red Onion and Rosemary sausages, mash and gravy.

Then I decided to stop tidying the fridge out and write this post instead.

Hope you are having a good weekend.

Sue xx

    1. Why have you left an Anonymous comment without signing your name as requested? I will answer your comment this time but future unsigned anonymous comments will be deleted ... as it clearly states in the comment section.

I have so much cheese because:

      1. Dairy-free cheese is relatively expensive and I stock up when it's on offer at a good price.
      2. It is also not available sometimes in the shops in my small town.
      3. Also it has really long dates on it, so there is no harm in buying four blocks at a time for future use. The longest dated cheese in this drawer is the end of October this year. So there is no danger of any of it going out of date, or inedible before I get around to using it up.

    2. I am busybeejay but it won’t let me use that and just comes up as anonymous.I usually put my name at the end but don’t know why I didn’t.I am Barbara and am not trying to be secretive just friendly.Feel a bit hurt by your attack.Barbarax

    3. There is absolutely no need to be hurt by my response, which is totally not an attack.

I have to be careful letting Anonymous comments through as one simple question let through published anonymously, leads to lots of others suddenly appearing, they then start as questions and move on to personal criticism and then links to unsavoury sites.
Since I asked for names to follow any comments that need to be sent using the Anonymous button ... because yes, Blogger is being an annoying sod this last 12 months making it very hard for some to comment ... there has been a huge reduction in the snarky and sometimes quite upsetting comments landing in my Inbox.

I did not want to delete your comment because it seemed such an innocent question and the answer would prove useful for others, but I did have to reiterate the Anonymous guidelines so that I wouldn't spend so much of the time I devote to posting, deleting comments instead.

  2. Hi Sue from Sue! I wish I was as organized as you. I do believe in not letting anything go to waste though. It's amazing how we can invent new recipes by simply cleaning out the fridge. I love cheese also but your cheese drawer puts mine to shame! Happy eating!💖

    1. It's a good looking cheese and fruit drawer isn't it ... a bit light on the fruit at the moment though. Oh yes, there will be lots of happy eating over the next few months. :-)

  3. Your veg really does still look good and makes a tasty looking coleslaw! I've still got a white cabbage left in my fridge which you have reminded me to use up. Neat cheese drawer too ;)
And I get Bisto tin envy every time I see yours! Have you noticed how expensive Bisto is becoming now Sue? I used to pay £1 per tub and the price has now risen to £3 I'm down to my last tub too :0/

    1. I do love a nice bowl of homemade coleslaw, I'm having the other half tonight with some crumbled up walnuts added.
I haven't bought Bisto in ages so I haven't noticed the increase, now that you've mentioned it though I will no doubt notice next time I hit the shops. This tin holds almost three of the regular sized red tubs, and I can't remember when I last filled it, but it's lasting well and is still almost two thirds full ... which gives me plenty of time to look out for a really good offer ready for refilling. :-)

  4. I do love anything with mash and gravy but have gone off Linda McCartney sausages, I have been getting the richmond vegan ones ,husband will eat those too ( must stop calling him husband I am formally introducing him to you , Phil - meet Sue , Sue - meet Phil , how do you do ). I too have been sorting but doing the larder cupboard and halving the stores by sending some to the foodbank , not looking forward to doing the freezer, it's cold enough without delving into the frozen depths of peas and broccoli . It's so satisfying to shop from home and I love coming up with some weird and wonderful meals. We had a date night at home last night, watching the first film we watched together with the same meal and one glass of wine, ( couldn't do the two bottles we had 32 years ago ! ), such a lovely evening
and cheap too ,candles and a snuggly blanket made it extra special ,the simple things are the best things. x

    1. I can't eat the Richmond ones because ... now don't laugh ... they taste too much like meat sausages!! Before I stopped eating meat I only ate chicken and bacon, and the occasional hotdog (which are the fakest sausages out there). I have not been able to stomach the texture of meats for years now. I think I manage with the Linda McCartney ones because of their texture. Yep ... I'm proper weird!!

Date night sounds wonderful, and yes I can't manage a full bottle of wine anymore either, in fact I think one glass is getting to be over my limit. Hi Phil, nice to meet you, Alan says Hello too. xx

  5. You HAVE to have bisto gravy with bangers and mash, I totally agree. Can't have it without! I'm going to put that in my meal plans this week (and it's all your fault) < grin > xx

  6. I have noticed more and more comments coming through as Anonymous. I'm sure it isnt deliberate but something to do with Blogger. I'm worried that mine are doing the same. Maybe we all need to sign our comments?

    1. Oh I know it's not deliberate on the comments that I publish, the once that I delete are a whole other story.
Just by adding a first name though means that me and other readers know who they're chatting to and it keeps it nice and friendly. Yours usually comes through well and just by clicking on your name it leads my readers to your blog, and it's always nice to introduce people to each other.

  8. You have given me inspiration to go through my fridge now, as I'm sure there are "things" in the bottom that need removing to the green bin. I do like a tidy fridge but mine gets very disorganised without me knowing. The cheese drawer looks good too.

    1. I have literally just this minute finished doing the fridge, and just knowing that it's all sparkly clean and organised ... if rather empty ... is making me very happy. Now I'm off to do todays blog post and load the photos onto the computer.
