Blue Skies and Cat Ladders

The skies have been blue for days, the heat is too much for me and the dogs but Alan is loving it.  But I am making the most of it and I usually manage to get all the washing out first thing and in these temperatures it's dry, folded and put away just a couple of hours later.  Which leaves the line clear for Alan to use or for it to be wound back in leaving the garden clear.  It's surprising the difference the lack of a line draped permanently across a garden makes.

I'm sat in the only shady bit available to me half way through the morning and in the distance you can see the start of what Alan was making for Ginger once we had finished building the new raised bed.

And this is what it looks like now!!

The cat ladder is not the prettiest construction ever but Ginger seems to like having his own safe landing spot and ladder down from the top of the fence.  Far better than the six foot drop and thud of old paws onto paving that his leaping off the top of the fence produced.  This way he can get onto his little shelf and run down the pallet that the raised bed parts arrived on.  The rest of the wood is going to be cut up for burning in the chimenea ... when the weather cools down a bit.  😎

  1. Great idea. Hope you only get Ginger using it!

    1. He has only got one little friend in this area, a little timid black cat. As long as there are no mountain lions we will be fine ;-)

  2. Clever. I'm sure Ginger appreciates his own personal step very much indeed.

    1. He only goes out once or twice a day and he is using it, most of the time he seems to like the vantage point and sits up there to keep an eye on the bird table.

    1. The new one is still waiting to be filled with compost etc but the old one shows the potential we will have with two of them up and running next year doesn't it. :-)

  4. Love the cat ladder, agree about washing lines, we've got a whirligig thing and take it down between uses !

    1. I've never gotten on with the whirligig things, I have always had a line or two instead. Sometimes they have been fixed, sometimes I would take them down and coil them up between uses and now I have a retractable one which is a game changer. We have a few hooks dotted around the garden so we can put out a line of the length we need and not have the garden full of unused washing line.

  6. The cat ladder is perfect and hopefully Ginger uses it often to save her paws.

    God bless.

    1. He makes a much quieter landing now for sure. I was worried about the thud his little paws made when they hit the floor.

  7. The raised bed looks great. I much prefer them to growing in the ground as I don't have to bend so far to tend to them! A clever idea for the cat ladder for Ginger too.

I love to see such a lovely clear blue sky but it's far too hot for me! I have just read that we will only swelter until 20th July then temperatures will drop to normal for this time of year. I can't wait!

    Enjoy your lovely garden x

    1. I have always preferred raised beds to growing in the ground, the height of this one would also deter 'carrot root fly' if we ever wanted to grow some carrots.

I do not like hot weather at all, I keep the curtains closed during the day to keep the sun out and try and keep the annexe an oasis of cool.

  9. I use a whirligig for my washing and it transforms beautifully and at no cost into a sunshade for these hot days, by draping a cotton throw over the top and pegging it down all round. Room in the shade for my comfy camping chair and small table while stiill enjoying the warmth, fresh air & birdsong while I read my book. Occasionally I wander round with secateurs, cutting off errant brambles or dead-heading and a bit of tidying before slinking back to my shady patch.

    1. I have never liked them, the couple I have had in rented homes have always been havens for spiders and webs, so you wouldn't catch me sitting under one!! But you can't beat a shady patch for a hasty retreat can you, no matter what's it's made from.
