Cat Shelf, Pigeon Friends and Unwanted Tongs

Ginger is making good use of his new shelf ladder combo.

No longer do we hear the thud of paws as he re-enters the garden from the back, instead he creeps up on us or just sits there and surveys all that he can see.  He's having a twice daily face-off with a pair of very fat pigeons just recently.  He sits on his little ledge or under the bench outside my door and stares at them as they parade very noisily up and down the fence opposite ... it honestly sounds as though they are wearing tiny hobnail boots.  Each glares at the other, but there's no attempt to chase them on Ginger's part and no attempt to fly off or do anything other than stare at him on theirs, it's very strange.

It's too hot for much decluttering at the moment, but I did manage to do this drawer while I was waiting for the kettle to boil and the sink to fill yesterday.

As spot the difference's go there's not that much to see!!

A bit tidier, a bit cleaner and that's about it.

Only two items went in the box of things that I'm getting rid of.  The rolling pin although beautiful and tactile just doesn't roll 'right' and if you roll a lot of pastry you'll know what I mean.  Perhaps it's a specialist one for something that I don't actually do ... does anyone know?

I picked it up a long time ago at an antiques fair along with a very old basket and some other kitchenalia.  The tongs ... well I just don't use them, they've been at the very back of the drawer for over a year and have not been fished out once.

I will be giving Alan first refusal of anything that I am getting rid of, it's going to be a very random box of stuff by the time I've  finished!!

A final word from Ginger ... "Where are my pigeon friends, they are due just about now?"

Elizabethd ... he hasn't rang the bell ... yet!!   😄

  1. The rolling pin looks like one made by a husband for his wife, when folk were more practical. I used to collect such things, but difficult to display so they got sold at Fairs over the years.

RAINING here - and thunder - hooray!!

    1. Spoke too soon - 5 minutes of rain which probably evaporated the minute it hit the soil! I meant to say earlier on that the rolling pin was probably made on a pole-lathe.

    2. Five minutes ... what a shame it needs to be at the very least an hour of good rain to give all the ground a good damping down!!

I loved it when folk were more practical and made just what they needed. I remember being dismayed when the handle of my favourite trowel broke a few years ago and I told Alan during one of his coffee breaks from the computer. A couple of hours later he came out of his workshop with a brand new handle made on his lathe and attached to the trowel head. It was one of the best presents he has ever given me.

  2. I love that you (Alan) built a ladder for him. 🐈
(But we had a ramp fixed into the house for Ollie where they is a change of level, plus one to get out of the front door, and another to help go in and out of the car 😝)

    1. As usual it was my design and Alan's building skills, we are a good partnership ... usually!!

  3. I wonder if the rolling pin might be for making some sort of flat bread moulded in the hand with the wooden roller?
Just love the cat ladder/shelf for Ginger - I’m sure he’s going to choose 3am for “bell ringing time”
Enjoy your blog very much - thank you from Country Girl

    1. Possibly, it's a strange shape for sure. If he rings that bell at 3am I will be knocking him off his shelf with a slipper chucked from the bedroom window!!

  4. I decluttered some clothes earlier today and then washed out the fridge ready for Asda delivery tomorrow. I’m now having a coffee and reading blogs. Catriona

    1. Yesterday was a real 'potter around slowly' kind of day wasn't it. I'm glad it's so much cooler here today.

  5. It looks like Ginger was eyeing up that bell in the top photo!
How do you keep your drawers so neat! I start off well then it all goes pear shaped after just a few days :D

  8. The rolling pin is a lovely old thing and I'm sure feels really nice to use. It appears to have a bit of a 'belly' which would make your pastry uneven...I'm sure you or Allan could sand away the excess wood and make it a true cylinder shape, which will work properly.

    1. It feels nice to hold, and yet feels totally wrong when you use it. I wouldn't dream of sanding away something that is so old, someone who collects kitchenalia will appreciate it just for the lovely wood I'm sure. I do have another rolling pin and I only need one so that will do.

  9. Ginger really seems to be enjoying her perch to survey her domain. Not sure about the rolling pin, but it kind of looks like one a friend has to roll chapati's with.

    God bless.

  10. I love seeing Ginger sitting up on his little staircase shelf! So much better for his little paws and joints, I'm sure, plus it makes for a nice viewing deck! I'm hoping that he and the pigeons become good friends. <3

    1. He doesn't seem tempted to try to catch them, perhaps they are just too big and it's too hot to make him even want to try. They do like to stare at him though which is very strange.

  11. I had the same tongs and also didn’t use them so off they went. I tend to use two forks now.

    1. Yes, I tend tend to use a knife and fork to turn things over and my spaghetti spoon/fork thing to lift spaghetti out of the pan ... when I remember that I have it!

  12. I use my tongs quite a lot for getting things out of the Ninja dual. Very handy it is.
I love the look of the rolling pin but I think it would really annoy me to use it.

    1. I can see they would be good for lifting things out of something high sided but even with the Remoska I can just use a fish slice, so I don't need them.

    1. He loves it, he leaps over the fence and shoots across the garden with barely a sound now, he's like a ginger coloured streak!!

  15. You would grind your teeth at the holiday cottage we’re staying in this week. The owner has three cottages in a row so has no doubt probably bought the cutlery for all three. We have three potato mashers and two dinner knives!
