Birthday Happy

Making a birthday cake before you've even had your breakfast is a new one to me.  But as I got up at 5.30 am and the birthday boy was coming at about 11am it seemed prudent to set to and get it in the oven before starting on my coffee and toast.

This was the first time baking a cake in my new oven and I was slightly wary.

I needn't have been as it turned out beautifully.  This oven does get to and hold a good temperature, and having the glass door panel is a breeze after using an Aga for so many years and not having a scooby doo what was happening behind the cast iron door.

I kept it simple a thin layer of jam and a smear of butter icing in the middle and then a thicker layer of icing on top and a recycled ribbon around the edge to add a bit of colour and we were good to go.  Now when I put the Happy Birthday candles into the cake in person this seemed like the right way round ... seeing it on the photo makes me realise that what my brother said was right.

It does read Birthday Happy!!

He didn't want us to light the candles as he didn't want to blow them out ... Covid and all that, not that he has it, he was just being super careful ... SO I can use them again and have the debate all over again about which way round to place the HAPPY and the BIRTHDAY  😄

In my defence when you held the cake at eye level it DID read the right way round.

  1. It looks absolutely delicious!
Could you have the candles going around the edge?

    1. Possibly it would have worked that way too, but it looked more balanced with them centrally placed. It's all gone now so we'll have to wait until the next birthday to play with the candles. Maybe cup cakes with one candle on each :-)

    2. Now that would solve all the problems!! You could plan birthday anagrams/Scrabble with the cakes like the Fawlty Towers opening.

  2. I think it looks fine however you read it. The most important thing is that it tastes fine. And I applaud the covid-safe candle-saving

    1. I hadn't even thought of that until he mentioned not to bother lighting them as he didn't want to blow on the cake.

    1. Haha ... it doesn't matter now. The important thing was he was pleased with the cake and took the remaining half home with him to have the next day, if it lasted that long!! He must have enjoyed it because he has already asked for another one at any opportunity.

  4. Well I read it as Happy Birthday otherwise it would have been reading Back To Front!

    1. I'm glad I'm not the only one. I always read front to back, which is why it made more sense as I pushed the candles into place. :-)

    1. Thank you, he enjoyed hi birthday, he usually spends them on his own so it made a nice change for him to bring Mum to us for the day.

It wasn't really me being a good sister I'm afraid I just have to get up and stay up once I wake up these days. I'm in far too much pain first thing to be able to lie in bed for long.

  7. A lovely Cake! Well worth waiting to see it! I read it front to back too, Sue, so it looks fine to me. Golly to a 5.50am start :/ What a lovely Sister you are :)

    1. I have just been waking up around this time for the past couple of weeks, no alarm setting or anything. I'd rather it was at least 6am though, that would be much more civilised ;-)

  8. It was my granddaughters birthday too but she'd requested Lemon Drizzle from her mum. Whereas I love a traditional Victoria sponge like you've made. The drizzle cake was good nevertheless.

    1. I've not had a lemon drizzle cake for ages, it's one of my favourites as long as it's not made too sickly sweet.

  9. It looks happy and festive no matter how you read it. I'm glad it was a happy event and I love the blue ribbon.

    1. It was just a bit of recycled blue ribbon from my sewing box, but it matched up with the candles perfectly.
