Panic Buying

Whatcha doing Mum?

Oh … just wondering if I should be out panic buying.

It's seems like it's everywhere on social media at the moment, tales of stripped bare shelves in shops and supermarkets, people panic buying toilet rolls, tinned and packet foods, people wearing masks on public transport and shopping with scarves pulled over faces.  It does makes you wonder what is sensible and what is actually necessary.

Personally I feel a steady approach is the best way forward, listen to and read the NHS guidelines, follow the local news and stay calm.

The only thing is ... guess what we have just one pack of at home ... yep, you guessed it toilet rolls!!

I'm almost too embarrassed to go out and buy a pack, I should have left half of that 'Who Gives a Crap' box at home ... ooops 🤣

I'll take the pooches for a walk instead, they are looking at me as if they want one.

  1. Hi Sue, I actually only had 2 rolls left so needed to buy some today, we went to 5 shops and not pack of toilet roll in sight, on our way around town with spotted the farm foods lorry so he obviously had a delivery to make, so by the time we got around there they were just putting them in the store, people were just grabbing them off the pallet, the world's gone crazy!xx

  2. Plenty in our local Morrisons. Not a hand sanitiser or a basic painkiller to be seen though!

  3. Not noticed any panic buying here, although the last 2 weeks the supermarket has been busier with more shoppers than usual. No empty shelves either, but there had clearly been a run on liquid soap as, although the shelves weren't empty, they weren't as well stocked as usual, I'd say they were half full. We did see a man coming out of the shop with 2 large packs of toilet roll and nothing else. Not seen anybody with a mask on. We won't be panic buying, there's no need, despite the media leading everyone to believe otherwise.

  4. Our main supermarket here seems to be the same as it always is - toilet rolls and everything else. Surely after a fortnight or so everyone will be so well-stocked that things will get back to normal anyway.

    1. Hopefully, fingers crossed.

It's very weird panic buying that's going on if you ask me … the only reason people are going to need all these toilet rolls is because they have bought so many tins of bloody baked beans!!

  5. Your dogs are just the cutest. Sometimes I think I should get a second dog as a pal for Bounce, but I am happy with the way things are. I am kind of old to be adopting a second dog. So far grocery shelves are full, I will take a look today. In my blog today I wrote about things I am buying related to the dread coronavirus. Stay well.

    1. Having two dogs is so much easier in many ways, they always have each other (and Ginger) for company if I go out, so I don't worry about them being at home for a while on their own. Have you thought of adopting an elderly dog, there's so much pleasure to be had from giving an elderly dog from a shelter a couple of years of happiness with you.

  6. In my area Tesco have put limits on the buying of certain things - although the shelves are still full - albeit the hand sanitiser.

  7. Hubby works for one of the large supermarkets and says the world has gone mad, he did double overtime last week and this week is the same, they have trouble keeping up with demand, the shelves are stacked and shortly they are empty again. To-day when I went shopping there, there was no paracetamol, no handwash, toilet rolls, I could go on and on. But why no pasta, people are buying it as if its is going out of fashion. I don't understand why the toilet roll as it is not that kind of virus. Also the handwash is for bacterial not viral? Answers on a post card. Helen S.

    1. Oh bloody hell … no pasta!! I need some, I used half of my remaining packet in last night's tea. I better dash ... lol.

I really don't understand the toilet roll thing either, maybe you make a fort out of packs of toilet roll and sit in it eating your beans and pasta and all will be well. I never have used hand-wash and hand sanitiser, it was proven in a three way experiment a few weeks ago that a good wash with plain water is just as effective. If you're out and about just don't touch yucky stuff or keep some little wipes in your bag, but that squirty stuff is ineffective the minute it dries :-)

  8. Lovely to see sweet Mavis again. I went to Poundstretcher and Asda today, no shortage of toilet rolls, didn't check the other things, I was looking for reduced stickers.

  9. We always keep a good store cupboard here - got an extra pack of toilet rolls last week, in case they were selling out. Most of the shops round here have them on the shelves, but hand gel and the sort of kills germs handwash sold out or low supplies.

  10. This is all so crazy! Things have not been bad here - yet. However there has just been some reported cases of the virus in this area so I expect the craziness will start up soon if not already. We are going to Cosco on Wednesday because their sale starts that day. It will be our usual shopping but I am curious as to what we will or won't find!

How wonderful to see both your babies there side by side!

  11. The elderly here but few items at a time because of space. If a building is quarantined would be difficult. Cautious buying not panic.

  12. The stores in my neighborhood here have limited the number of toilet paper packs, cleaning wipes, soups and other supplies people can buy per customer, and the shelves, though not absolutely bare, are close. My friend wore a mask to see another friend in the hospital and has since been diagnosed with pneumonia, which is what he had. Nuts.

  13. Keep calm and carry on. I bought an extra pack of loo rolls but it won’t last long if we have to go into lockdown like Italy for weeks. I have so much homemade jam we might have enough to outlast the virus! Pasta with damson jam anyone?

  14. I noticed I was getting lots more people reading my post about essentials for an emergency stockpile, which I wrote originally when the 'Beast from the East' led to empty shelves. So I did do a big supermarket order last week. Issue for me is that normally I don't have much spare food in the house - try to keep food bills low by using up what we have, and just buying what's needed for specific meals. So I ordered spares of things we use a lot like tinned tomatoes, tuna and flour. Did not buy loo roll (had some) or hand sanitiser (don't like the plastic bottles, got ordinary soap). Suspect anyone with a well-stocked larder won't need to buy anything extra.

  15. I have stocked up so my cupboards are full and I have at least 20 rolls of double roll toilet paper ready. I work at the hospital so the chances of being sick or sent home are relatively high if the virus arrives here which I am sure it will. I want to avoid giving germs to anyone, so my plan for the next few weeks is to stay home, only leaving to go to and from work. It is hard to know how we will be affected, but seeing what is happening in Italy at the moment it is nice to be prepared and to not have to panic int he next few weeks.

All the supplies I have brought are things I will use over the winter anyway, and I am liking that there is a lot of choice in my cupboards at the moment.

    1. In your case this is very sensible. I only hope everyone that is selfishly panic buying stops and thinks of the people that really need to have a good base larder at home. Emptying shelves is not the answer, a healthy stash of your basic foods (and yes loo rolls) is.

  16. Well we went to Lidl in Newtown today and ha no loo roll (doesn't bother me we use Green Cane and it's delivered) I didn't know the virus came with the s**ts lol
    Ha ho

  17. I remember reading that there could be a shortage of toilet rolls when Brexit happened, because all the paper needed for making them came from abroad (was it Sweden?) and if Europe stopped trading with us, then there would be difficulties. Well Brexit is all but forgotten now and Coronavirus panic has taken over, so once again, it's the toilet rolls that are uppermost in everyone's mind. Hopefully soon every house will be bursting at the seams with all these panic-bought supplies and gradually, things will return to normal . . . until the next crisis . . or Storm . . or whatever!

  18. .
I think that we are perhaps too quick to accuse people. We are told that up to 80% of the population could get coronavirus and that if we start to feel unwell we should self-isolate. It's been suggested that if they then suspect that they have the virus the self isolation should be extended by 14 days. If every supermarket shopper buys a couple of extra packs of toilet rolls and a few extra provisions, the shelves will empty quickly in the short term. But is this panic buying or sensible preparedness? Should we instead wait until we are unwell and then go shopping before self isolating which somewhat defeats the object. I do a main shop monthly but there are many who can't afford to have well stocked cupboards as the norm, and they won't have enough in to cover a period of isolation. A friend who works in supermarket management says that last weekend only a very small number of people were buying large amounts; the vast majority were buying only a couple of extra packs.
