Jettisoning Stuff

Another weekend, another car boot sale.  Well, the same venue but mostly different stock.

We were loaded up ready for action last night and in place and selling for 10am this morning.  It's very civilised here in our neck of the woods, no 6am start times for car boot sales.  It was thankfully much, much cooler and very pleasant to stand selling and chatting with all the lovely folk that came to the stall.

There were lots of dogs around too for Suky to bark at and for Mavis to ignore.  Mavis just took to her bed after a few minutes of watching people go by and had a lovely lazy morning while Mum and Dad worked hard, but generally had fun.

The rainclouds started to roll slowly in by 2.30pm and we began tidying and packing away.  Making sure the boxes were ready for next time.  Now we're home and having counted the money ... a grand total of £163.50 ... and had a cup of coffee we are now awaiting the arrival of two buyers who are buying larger items off us from Facebook Marketplace.

It's all sell, sell, sell here at the moment, but jettisoning the stuff is a wonderful feeling.

I mentioned getting rid of all my old diaries the other day and after a quick check through them for any important information ... a few things which I quickly copied into my new Filofax ... they are now in the pile ready for a little bonfire.

It's a good job I did check, as stuck in one of them was this, the original disc from when we appeared on Escape to the Country a few years ago.  It would have been a shame to lose the chance to watch Alan teaching people how to feed hungry Large Black piglets and the views of our lovely Oxfordshire home with the pigs in the fields.

  1. Sue well done - another car boot with very good takings. You have inspired me to want to declutter and simplify my life so thank you. I tried to find your episode of 'Escape to the Country' on iplayer and, if I found the right one, it's not currently available. Would you consider loading your copy to youtube if allowed ? xx

    1. I'm sorry but I don't think I'm allowed to. We signed an agreement that the television company could show the episode for perpetuity but that we wouldn't copy it independently.

  2. I would like to do more jettisoning but the other person in the house is dead against it.....

    1. Yes, it only rally works if everyone is in agreement. Although saying that, until Alan was fully on-board with this I did still go ahead selling everything that I considered to be mine.

  3. Well done at the car boot sale, that is a brilliant amount of cash, and good luck with the Facebook sales, I also looked for the Escape to the Country episode its not availble though.
We are all packed up and ready to sell tomorrow. It really is surprising what can be found when you have a good dig around. x

    1. It pops up on other channels from time to time, twice in the last year our niece has been in touch to say Uncle Alan is on the tele again with the pigs!

It's definitely surprising what you find, I was literally just putting our flasks away after this car boot sale when I found some enamel mugs in the cupboard that we don't use anymore ... they will be added to the box ready for next time.

  4. Great result from the car boot sale. There is something quite cathartic about getting rid of stuff we no longer need. Its like clearing the mind and soul.

  5. I remember that episode, and leaping up and down saying "Look, I read her blog!" Very glad you found it. The recording of my OHs one TV appearance (in 1984) did get recorded, but the videotape degraded so we have no reminder

    1. My younger son was on Fifteen to One a couple of weeks ago, I think the whole family has him 'saved' on their various TV 'boxes'.

  6. Great going at the car boot sale. You did very well.

Glad that you checked everything over first. Losing that CD would have been too bad.

    God bless.

    1. Thank you, we did.

I'm glad I found it, it wouldn't have been the end of the world to lose it, we have the memories of that day ... but having the disc is a bonus :-)

  7. Rain here almost all day and for tomorrow too - no boot sales! You do so well earning at your sales, my stuff to sell is always such junk and worth nothing much as it was probably bought from a boot sale in the first place.
My 3 minutes of TV fame was only on a local BBC news during the last bird flu outbreak......I didn't watch it!

    1. Our only secret to doing well is always to take a few 'big ticket' items. Today it was some electric fencing and all the accessories needed to set it up, and an animal medicine injector/dose measure thingy. Those two items alone brought in £50.

I bet a lot of folk that knew you watched it though ;-)

  8. Nothing like a good clear out...Do you now find yourself buying less? Best to you.

    1. We buy virtually nothing now, even at the car boot sales. All Alan bought today was a refill cup of tea for his flask. Even our food shopping is still minimal as we are still eating our way through the freezers ... our big chest freezer is going to be sold as soon as it is empty!

    1. Me only for a split second, but Alan was on for about five minutes, showing the folk who were looking to buy a house in our area how to look after pigs. They spent over half a day filming on our farm but just used a little bit. It it was a great experience and a good laugh with the film crew ... eating my home-made scones around our kitchen table.

    2. Sounds fun! My other half has been on TV a few times, me I'm far to shy (AKA antisocial).

  10. I love 'Escape to the Country' but don't specifically recall that one. They keep showing repeats so maybe . . .

    1. Oh it's a few years ago now, we were still living in Oxfordshire when it was shown. Yes, our niece ... who's a big Escape to the Country fan lets us know whenever it is shown again.

  11. Its horrifies me how much money is wasted on stuff we don't really need. I declutter every so often but don't sell only send to charity shops. I would be a millionaire now if I only knew then what I know now.

    1. I totally agree, which is why our decluttering should really work this time ... we've stopped buying stuff. Gosh think of the money we are going to save for doing other things with.

  12. Jettisoning stuff is indeed cathartic! I've been on a Great Edit and Purge for some time now and rent spaces at a local Antique Mall. We had a Fire there Today so that was my excitement for the Weekend, being on the Fire Clean-Up Crew! Thankfully due to the Heroics and lightening fast response of staff working that Morning, they put the fire out within 9 minutes and even before the Fire Dept. arrived or it could have been so much worse! Nobody hurt, not much Inventory lost, Unity of Purpose of us all coming together to run damage control and put things right so we could re-open in the Morning had such Positive Energy flow! Can't really do Boot Sales here, it was 111 degrees Today!

    1. Wow ... an exciting weekend for you then. I'm glad not too much stuff was lost as I guess lots of folk would have been really upset by that.

My biggest realisation that I had fallen out of love with my 'stuff' was when I realised if there was a fire and we lost everything, as long as we and the animals were safe I really would not have been at all bothered at starting from scratch in a much simpler and more restrained fashion.

I did fight the urge to burn the house down though ;-)

  13. Wow, well done on the boot sale. Ours around here start at silly o'clock 6am and I can't manage that on my own (G works every weekend) but I do agree that it feels so liberating clearing out cupboards, drawers, bookcases etc I feel a bit freer (is that a word?) every time I do it :) Double wow on being in Escape to the Country! I must try and spot you and Alan at some point in the future. Have a great Sunday Sue x

    1. I've done FAR too many silly o'clock starts for boot sales in the past, it feels very civilised to be arriving at 10am on a Sunday morning. It gives us time to have a good breakfast and make sandwiches and flasks to keep us going ... which stops us spending any of our earnings on refreshments.

  14. Well done on your car boot income, Sue. I really must get on with doing one. I'll have take hubby's car, can't fit much in my Fiat 500!!
