Not Just Sausage Rolls

Three rolls made in the sausage roll maker that I confessed to buying yesterday, thank goodness I had enough cash left over this month to be able to get it.  Only there are no sausages or sausage meat inside these ones,  inside one there is pate and inside the other two is apple from a tin of apple pie filling that I had in the cupboard.  Yes, the sausage roll maker makes four, but they are so good the other one containing some pate didn't even last long enough to be photographed.

They are a doddle to make using this ready rolled puff or shortcrust pastry.  I have tried both now, this one that I bought yesterday and one of my other shortcrust pastry rolls from the freezer thawed out.  You get three pieces from each ready rolled roll that fit into the maker (two at a time obviously 😁) so one of my sets of four 'sausage rolls' was a puff pastry bottom and a shortcrust pastry top ... it worked perfectly with no discernible difference between to two types of pastry,  I think the lid pressing down stops the puff pastry from rising but makes it super crispy at the same time.

As each roll is sealed by the machine while it cooks drippy fillings can't escape until you bite into your roll, so these would be brilliant for school lunches or picnics etc ... or simply sitting on the sofa watching scary movies like I did yesterday.

Up to now we have tried:

Linda McCartney Sausage and Sage and Onion stuffing x 4
Pate x 2
Tinned Apple Pie Filling x 2

And for lunch today I am going to try making some potato, cheese and onion rolls.  The world is my oyster and if it can be cooked in ten minutes, fits neatly into the indentations and sounds like it might be tasty wrapped in pastry it will be being tried.  I see a lot of leftovers being turned into very tasty little sausage roll shaped pies over the course of this No Spend Challenge.

Of course one of my main reasons for buying this ... as well as an addiction to sausage rolls and all things pastry ... was to save on having to put my oven on.  My Remoska can cook some pastry items, so it already saves me a fortune with not turning on the oven but but it does seem to cook pastry slightly erratically, so this little gadget is the perfect accompaniment to the Remoska to save me money on the electric bill.  I can use them covering most dishes and leaving my oven switched off except for larger batch cooking sessions or cakes.

And I intend to make up a big batch of homemade pastry and have the right sized pieces stored in the freezer ready for use to make this even more economical.  And I know I have at least three boxes of these sausages in the freezer, which tasted wonderful when thawed and added to some sage and onion stuffing before being trialled as my very first batch in the sausage roll maker.

Winner, winner sausage roll ... and other things ... dinner.  😄

  1. I'm not really a fan of pastry but those look lovely. I bet mashed potato with cheese and onion would make a really tasty filling! xx

    1. It does cook the pastry really well, it's beautifully flaky and uniform.

  2. The world is indeed your oyster. But please don't put oysters in your sausage rolls! Does anybody make their own RuffPuff pastry at home any more? When I was a child, and nobody had a freezer with a pack of JusRol puff pastry stashed away, the church ladies were always going on about the RuffPuff they used for their sausage rolls.

    1. I have never eaten an oyster in my life, and wouldn't ... even wrapped in pastry :-)

I loved making ruff puff pastry at school I got to be quite a whizz at it, every single time the teacher said you can choose what to cook at the next lesson I would make Jam or Apple Puffs from scratch ... and scoff the lot.

  3. Sounds like a winner all the way round. I enjoy sausage rolls too. A little treat when we go to a friend's for lunch was the little tiny ones you buy frozen. Not something I would buy, nor the Battenberg cake she always gets in, but reminds me of childhood Sunday tea.

I used to buy those Linda McCartney veggie sausages many years ago now, and I do remember them being very tasty.
Certainly a good saving not having to use the Remoska.

    1. Oh the Remoska is super cheap to use, between that and the sausage roll maker for pastry items I have my whole repertoire covered now ... the oven will remain cold :-)

  4. They look delicious. We used to make rough puff and flaky pastry at school and although it is easy to make it is time consuming compared with short crust. Ready rolled does make the job easier. I am waiting to see what new and adventurous fillings you come up with. The machine might even take off in cafes just likte the 'Toasties' machine did. Look out Costa!!

    1. Snap, my Thursday Housecraft lesson taught me all the basics of pastry making and making meals from scratch. Something schools should go back to doing. If you can't leave school able to feed yourself it's very sad.

I was actually thinking of trying to make a toastie in it, I'm not sure how it would handle bread but it's worth a go :-)

    1. That's a shame, there was a whole basket section of them in ours. It was part of the week before lasts middle aisle selection ... so I did debate it's purchase for quite a long time.

  7. Oh no you have inspired me to invest in one of the sausage roll makers. Delia has a wonderful recipe for vegetarian sausage rolls in her Christmas book. I can’t wait to try it. I also love the idea of using pate. I use a lot of your recipes Sue. Thank you for sharing. Glad you were safe from the storm.

    1. Just seeing your comment written down made me think of another idea ... a thin layer of pate around a skinny sausage would make a 'sausage roll' into a mini Wellington :-)

Something else for me to try, thank you.

  8. I think anything which saves putting on the oven is worth a go, Sue, and those sausage rolls look delicious. A great idea of yours to make your own pastry in pieces just the right size for a quick batch of them too. I think Aldi should pay you commission on sales of the machine! ...lol... ;)

    1. Haha ... it sounds as though they are virtually sold out. Hopefully they will reappear in the centre aisles before too long, things do seem to on a rotational basis I've noticed since shopping there more.

  9. We have a toasted sandwich maker which this looks similar to. Toasted sandwiches always taste different/better from the machine. I think this will open up all sorts of ideas for you.

    1. It is really along the same lines as a toasted sandwich maker, it just seals the seams in a sausage roll shape instead of the triangles you usually get in a sandwich maker. I'm going to try making mini toasted sandwiches in it using bread instead of pastry to see how it copes ... it should work.

  10. That looks like a wonderfully handy gadget. Seems like you could do spring rolls as well as bean filled tortillas. The world is your oyster!

    God bless.

    1. Yes, that's the thing that persuaded me to buy it. If I can just use my oven perhaps once a week for a batch bake, filling it to capacity and then use my hob and gadgets it will save me a lot of money over the course of each quarter.

  12. Welllll..... I was so impressed I went online to see if I could get a sausage roll maker, and nope, they're unavailable in little New Zealand! So, miffed, I looked for a Remoska, and again, no joy - and nothing that resembles one. That's the problem of having only 5 million people and living in a little country at the other end of the world!

    2. It's going to give me a whole new element to my cooking for sure and luckily it's tiny enough not to take up to much room in the limited cupboard space I have.
