Christmas, Pickled Pumpkin Seeds and Holding Hands

With Christmas coming up it seems everywhere I look someone is trying to sell me something to make my life more perfect to make me more happy, it's something I need, it's something they tell me that I want and it's something that I just have to have to make my life complete.

Well no, actually they are wrong!!

What I do really, really need is someone to remind me in the future not to tip my new bag of Pumpkin Seeds into a jar that has preciously held pickled onions.  My breakfast was ... interesting ... this morning.  Yoghurt, banana, peanut butter, granola and a large helping of pickle flavoured pumpkin seeds.

Never again  😕

Don't you think it's quite weirdly wonderful to see the amount of Christmas trees going up already.   I won't be putting mine up until December as usual, but I can fully understand the need for twinkly bright lights and prettiness during this second lockdown.  Spying next doors beautifully decorated Christmas tree awash with fairy lights makes me smile each evening as I step outside with Suky for her walk. We all need pretty, and we all need hope ... but my oh my won't it all be dusty be the time Christmas is over!!

Oh and before I go, did you see one of the 'Headlines' on Yahoo News this morning?

'Holly Willoughby holds hands with husband during rare outing .... '

Haha ... I'm astounded!!

  1. Think how dull the houses will appear after having them up so long?

    1. Yes, perhaps they'll stay up for Easter ;-)

  2. I've got the chimney sweep coming on the 18th Dec so will wait until after then for putting up a tree and the Christmas Mantelpiece decoration.

Pickled onion Pumpkin seeds on cereal could start a new trend? or not

  3. Same every year. I always want to hibernate at this time of the year anyway. My shopping routine will stay the same, only two shops, and last thing at night before they close, ignoring the Crimbo stock.

    1. I'm trying to do lots more doggy walks and lots less shopping. I do need to go today, but it will be the first time for 3 weeks. It's good to be using stuff up, but I've had some unusual dinners ;-)

  4. I know exactly what you mean about pickled onion flavour. A friend suggested pickling runner beans when we had a glut. I have never pickled anything before so cheated and used pickling vinegar. Par boil the beans then under cold water then add pickling vinegar cold. A few weeks later we tried them and they were lovely and crunchy but soooo sharp/sour. I then drained them and added sugar to the vinegar and left to dissolve then poured back over. They were still too sharp to be edible. Then I had a brainwave. I drained them and used the pickled onion vinegar from the jar I had just emptied. Now we have runner beans that taste just pickled onions. With eyes closed you would think you were eating pickled onions. Not sure if there is any advantage to pickled onion flavoured beans! Two lessons learned here. I will never use pickling vinegar again and I will never use pickled onion vinegar again. We can't bring ourselves to eat the beans. I feel for you having that flavour on a breakfast.

  6. I have seen a few homes decorated for Christmas and yes I too am liking it. I will probably put mine up at the end of the month, only slightly earlier than usual. I admit I did have a little chuckle at the breakfast incident.

    1. They do look pretty when I walk past windows with curtains still open on our evening doggy walk, but I'm not tempted to do mine just yet :-)

  8. Our tree won’t be going up until December. I’m a traditional 12 days before Christmas person normally, whether it will be any different this year, I don’t know. It will depend on the other family members and whether they want it up earlier. Pickled pumpkins seeds? I’m not even going to go there! :))

    1. I don't mind mine going up a bit early, but I'm not going to be dusting a Christmas tree so not TOO early ;-)

  9. Ha, ha! Yes, I've learned to smell my jars before I put something in them. I, too, am seeing a lot of Christmas trees going up, but I always think how tired everything will look by Dec. 25.

    1. It turns out I re-used a lid that had obviously been on a pickle jar ... it's gone in the bin!!

Yes the decorations and tree will be tired and sad by Christmas if they go up now, I'm hanging on a bit.

  10. I live in Saskatchewan, and with Covid numbers higher than they were when this pandemic hit first time round, we're heading to a second lockdown. Usually, I'm a "12 days of Christmas are too long!" gal, but this year I put up my outdoor Christmas lights last weekend, and have turned them on tonight (I waited until after Remembrance day). I work in longterm care, and I feel we all need a little more sparkle in our lives this year.
    Love your writing, Sue.

    1. I do think I might invest in a few fairy lights and have them up early, you can't beat a bit of twinkle in the house when you are watching early Christmas movies.

  11. I saw several trees tonight as well as outside lights. Seems like everyone needs that extra dose of cheer.

    1. If it makes people happy, I'm all for it, just not for me for a couple of weeks. But I am warming to the idea of fairy lights :-)

  12. Pickled pumpkin seeds in yogurt? Oh my! I love the pretty Christmas decorations but I'm having trouble coming up with gifts for family this year. We are trying to give gifts of an "experience" such as a night out or a visit to a museum or something in place of a more traditional gift that may not be needed. But, in a pandemic we are finding "experience" gifts difficult to get!

    1. That sounds like a good idea, but it's not something that's easy to plan is it? Especially here in the UK with so many places opening up and then having to close again, I don't know what it's like for where you are. I think in my family it's just going to be money for toys for the children and nothing for the adults.

    2. We do that as well, Bonnie. We buy gift certificates to places. We don't set it up for specific days. That is for them to do. This year, it is even more important. Small businesses are struggling and need the support. A gift card to a local theme park might be the difference between them surviving and not surviving this pandemic.
