An Addiction to Advent Calendars?

I might not have my Christmas tree up yet like my neighbour, but I am feeling a itch to get myself a little one here at the flat.  Up to now I seem to have been scratching that Christmas itch by collecting Advent calendars.

I have the ordinary sort, you know the ones with just pictures that are revealed day by day throughout December, with no chocolate piece or trinket falling from the door as you open it in eager anticipation of being one more day closer to Christmas ... the sort I had as a child.

My Dad used to take them off us when the decorations came down after Christmas.  Long after the big reveal of Mary, Joseph and the Baby Jesus in the stable as we opened the final and biggest door on Christmas Eve, and then he would fasten all the little doors back down again for next year.  We never minded, I guess in those days lots of people did that it wasn't such a throw away society back then.

Mine is currently balanced precariously on the little table alongside the Poinsettia that Alan bought me as a joint housewarming/apology for killing your last one gift when he first came to visit the flat.

I'm guessing I know who is in the little stable  😄

I also have a rather splendid jam filled advent calendar .

I just couldn't resist when I found out that Bonne Maman did advent calendars.  To make up for my extravagance I bought Alan an almost as splendid liqueur filled chocolate one.  There's nothing childish about these.

As well as the little doors to open on my nice traditional one and the jams to spread on my toast each day from my jam filled one, I also have splurged a whole £3.70 on this years Jacquie Lawson 2020 Nordic Advent Calendar.

With doors to 'open' each day and games to play both now and throughout December along with gorgeous Christmas music while you visit your downloaded Advent Calendar, it is just the most perfect way to spend a few minutes each day in the run up to Christmas and a lovely little lockdown ritual.

Oh and I might have also splurged on a few Advent Calendar Christmas cards for my nearest and dearest.  I must get them written and posted out so that they too can spend each morning opening little doors throughout December.

  2. Goodness, it will take you half the morning to open them all! (maybe thats a slight exaggeration)

I love the traditional ones best but this year I'm saving my money for my 12 days of Christmas treats after the 25th

    1. Haha ... jam window in time for breakfast and picture window while the kettle boils and then sit down at the computer and do the Jacquie Lawson one. That's my lockdown advent mornings sorted then :-)

  3. I dearly love the Jacquie Lawson one and I've already played the pre Advent games and decorated the Christmas Tree in the house. It's amazing value for what you get.

    1. It is isn't it, I've done the jigsaws and moved up quite a few levels of the games. Somehow it seems especially good to have a little routine each day in the run up to Christmas this year.

  4. Hubby and i both have kinder advent calenders , he laughs when i buy them but i think secretly he enjoys opening the little doors , we always do ours after tea with a cup of coffee . My daughter had great difficulty getting an advent calender at a decent price for my grandson who is severely lactose intolerant , she was horrified at the prices .

    1. The dairy free 'Moo Free' one in Aldi is less than £5, if you don't have one local to you it's also available on Amazon. The white chocolate version is especially nice.

    1. I haven't bothered with the Jacquie Lawson one for a couple of years, it must have completely slipped my mind. I'm so glad they advertised on Facebook and I spotted it.

  8. I still remember the L'Occitane advent calendar my friend bought for my 60th birthday 4 years ago. I hid in in my wardrobe after my birthday in the October until the end of November. Everyday I got a hand cream or shampoo it was beautiful. Enjoy your daily jam and the opening of the little windows. It does transport me back to my childhood.

  10. I love all of your advent calendars, what fun! Do you know I have never had one and I think I should change that and get one this year. When I was a child we didn't have much money but my Mother would string a cord or ribbon between the posts of my bed and put clothes pins on it for each day of December. It was fun as a child to take one off each day plus when I continually asked how many days until Christmas I was reminded to just count the number of clothes pins left!

  12. I had an Advent Calendar up when the boys were younger. You moved a little mouse every day and I would fill the pocket with a small treat for each of them.

    Your calendars are intriguing.

    God bless.

    1. I think all children (and us great big kids) love an advent calendar. There's something so sweet about opening little doors and seeing what's behind whether that is a 'thing' or just a lovely little picture :-)

  13. I always thrill with excitement at opening those little doors as we edge closer to Christmas. Your calendars are beautiful, who doesn't love a snowy festive scene, and I especially like the idea of the jam one. X

  15. I have what I call a proper advent calendar (with just pictures) every year. Sine adulthood, I’ve always bought them, but get ridiculously excited to open the first door :)
