Blogmas - Advent Day 10

Oooh candy canes, I cannot resist the little blighters.

I got a this box of giant candy canes in my Vegan Kind Hamper the other day and as I put them into a little jug ... so that they can be decorative as well as delicious ... my mind raced back to Wyevale Garden Centre in Altrincham, where me and Mum used to go for coffee and lunch every Wednesday for years.  A couple of years ago they were selling off the remains of the Christmas stock well after the festive period and they had so many candy canes that they had all been reduced to just 10p a box.  Needless to say I bought ten boxes with ten candy canes in each for just £1, so 100 at just 1p each.  We had Cineworld passes in those days, so every time I went to the cinema I would take a candy cane or two to stop me from being tempted by the sweet displays in the foyer.  My teeth might not have thanked me, but my purse sure did. πŸ˜€

I was sure I had done a blog post about this over on my old blog Our New Life in the Country, so I trawled through lots of old posts and fell down a rabbit hole of my own making ... two hours later and still no post about my bargain candy canes, (there were some others but not the right ones), but lots of other bargains ...

... and a good look into my old larder to boot.

Anyway, back to the business of the day.

Day ten of the sock and beauty advent calendars and this time I have pretty little Fir trees on my socks and a bottle of Vitamin C and Turmeric oil.

By ringing the surgery bang on the 8am opening time yesterday and waiting in the queue of phone calls for 25 minutes I managed to snaffle the last face-to-face appointment available with my doctor this morning, the receptionist sounded so pleased that she was able to fulfil my request that she got us both laughing.  Gosh they have to work so hard at the moment, it was nice to hear her laugh.

  1. It feels like a major triumph when you finally get your call answered by the receptionist. I am pleased that you managed to get an appointment f2f.

    1. So am I, I'm pretty phone phobic so all the phone consultations really stress me out.

  2. Glad to hear you got your appointment...at last. Perhaps they hope you will quietly expire whilst waiting in the queue and that will successfully cut down the patient lists!!
Love the orange ones - they are my favourites now along with the robins.πŸŽ„πŸŽ„

    1. I think Covid has been sent to cut down the population numbers and will keep adapting until it gets us all one way or another. Poor NHS struggling in the fight against it.

They are the snazziest socks aren't they, I don't usually like orange but I do like these. πŸ˜€

    1. Same here mostly, but some days the doctors seem to do half a day of phone consultations and half a day of face to face.

  4. I love all your socks! What fun. Where did you get this advent calendar? I’m thinking about next year. (I know it might not be available in the U.S.)

I bought the Jacquie Lawson London advent calendar online and am enjoying it!

Good luck at your doctor appointment.

    1. This one was from The White Stuff -

The Jacquie Lawson calendar is lovely this year isn't it. πŸ˜€

    2. Thank you for the information on the sock advent calendar. The White Stuff does mail to the U.S. but the advent calendar isn’t listed, maybe because it’s sold out. I’ve bookmarked the site for next year.

  5. We must be really fortunate, we don't seem to have much trouble at all getting through to our surgery, don't think we've ever had to wait more than a minute or 2 in a queue. And both of us have had face to face appointments offered (and gladly accepted). I guess that's the beauty of living in a fairly rural area, rather than a big hugely populated town. Hope your GP appointment was helpful.

    1. It really is dependent on where you live isn't it. There have been a lot of new housing estates built on the periphery of this formerly small town and the influx of people has really stretched the surgeries capabilities.

  6. Talking about stocking up - which I really never do - I noticed on my tuna fish can yesterday that the expiration date was in 2023! So if I had any sense, I would buy up a bunch of it when it is on sale since it would last a couple years! But then I worry that if I get sick and die, I would have just wasted all of that money on tuna fish that I will never get to eat!
You have been so much better at planning ahead and saving money than I have ever been! :)

    1. Haha ... I had to smile, I had this vision of you writing a will leaving your collection of cans of tuna fish to a particular friend or relative. πŸ˜€

  7. Glad to hear you got an appointment and hope they can come up with the best treatment plan for you.

I'm on the other side of the Pond, but I had to have a telehealth call on Wednesday due to a sore throat. However, it didn't save me from driving to the doc's office later in the day to get tested (for everything under the sun) while sitting in my car. On the other hand, within 10 minutes of leaving, I got a call to tell me I had strep! Started antibiotics that night. Though how I got strep is a mystery as I hadn't left the house or been around anyone but DH (who goes out to work) in the previous 10 days. So I blamed him! Of course, he feels fine. :)

    1. It was worth getting tested, hopefully with the antibiotics you will be feeling so much better at Christmas time. Take care of yourself. Xx

  8. Good for you in getting your face to face with your doctor.

That was a great deal on the candy canes.

    God bless.

    1. It was really helpful. I've decided I will open the sock Advent calendar for the first twelve days and then wear them for the next twelve days. Although Alan has suggested I just peg them out on the washing line like Christmas bunting πŸ˜€πŸ€£
