It's been a modern Christmas with sock and beauty filled advent calendars to open each day, so here's a little step back in time to my little stack of Christmas DVDs. I do have a couple more ... Last Christmas, The Holiday and Love Actually are just three I can think of off the top of my head but they are minus their covers and stored safely in one of my DVD folders. I try and watch each film over the holiday period at some point, but any that miss a year get watched first the following one. I was going to give Love Actually a miss this year, but for some reason I have a sudden urge to see it again ... that final montage of greetings, hugs and kisses just lifts the heart.
It's amazing isn't it that DVDs are even starting to feel like a step into the past. I remember holding on to my VHS tapes for far too long and resisting the urge to buy new films on DVD because it seemed so strange. Now most films can be watched on streaming services like Sky, Netflix or BritBox, and all our terrestrial television can be found on various catch up services, and suddenly having a DVD collection seems slightly dated. But they come in useful when the internet goes off and you just want to sink into a much watched and much loved film or boxset, whether it be at Christmas or any other time.
Love Actually is one of my absolute favourite films! We'll be having - and hanging onto - DVDs in this house for a very long time....no streaming or catch-up for us! Our WiFi/Broadband is so ridiculously slow here (one of the disadvantages of being so rural) that we simply cannot do any streaming, etc - trying to download a film takes 2 or 3 DAYS (and I'm not joking!). Honestly, ridiculous as it seems in this age of technology, we really do live in the Dark Ages here. But the pluses outweigh the minuses, so I'm not complaining. What a lovely collection of colourful socks.....are you sure you don't want to take up Alan's suggestion?! (oh that did make me laugh! Only a man would think of that!).
ReplyDeleteI know exactly what you mean about slow Wifi/Broadband we were just the same in our last three rural properties, hence us forking out for satellite broadband for the Welsh house. There was no way we could run our business from there without good access. The socks are staying firmly in the house and on my feet ... well I think so, it would be a good joke for him to wake up to on Christmas Day wouldn't it ;-)
DeleteI find it hard to believe that the day of the DVD is falling by the wayside. We used to hire Betamax and then VHS tapes when the kids were small. It only seems like yesterday. We can't be bothered to pay for a streaming service as we'd rather spend our money on staying warm! although we do use catch-up on TV sometimes. I find it bothersome to try to keep up with technology. G keeps saying that our TV is outdated but with the cost of a new TV comes an upgraded aerial because we don't want tp pay for Sky.

There are still some DVDs available to buy new from the supermarkets but the sections have shrunk so much, so it is usually just the new releases that are there. They are so cheap to buy from charity shops that my collection grew instead of shrinking while I lived at the flat. We've not had Sky television for years, in Wales we had Freesat and here we both have Freeview boxes, so if I stopped paying for Netflix and Prime I would still have quite a lot of extra channels to watch.
DeleteThe blue sky of the last header was jarring on me a bit, it's so grey here most days, so I thought why not go seasonal for a while.
I took my kid friendly DVDs into school only to discover that my brand new desk computer (connects to the Smartboard) doesn't even have a DVD or CD player on it :-( My younger colleagues just use their passwords for their streaming platforms but I don't have any of these at home. How quickly technology moves on!!
ReplyDeleteThat reminds me of when I went to collect my current car back in 2017, I put my CDs into the glove box ... only to discover that there wasn't a CD player!!

ReplyDeleteUnless you count Dickens' A Christmas Carol I've never seen a Xmas film. We ditched all the DVDs & Videos years ago and it's streaming all the way. We've still got every piece of vinyl we ever bought, though. Music sounds much better! xxx
I watch at least two versions of A Christmas Carol every year. I love them all with the exception of the Muppet version.

DeleteJust arrived in Scotland so a bit late commenting today. The robins and orange fir trees still my favourite though I must admit it is a close thing now I have seen the hedgehogs! Perhaps you could hang them up in a line and put a chocolate in each one for the remaining 12 days!🎄
