Betwixtmas Day Two - Cartoons = Happy Dogs ... and Christmas Dinner

The dogs, and sometimes Ginger too, love cartoons.  Especially the ones that are about animals or strange humans.  This morning Mavis has been glued to The Gruffalo's Child and now she is watching something about a big white puffy robot type thing.  I don't know what it's called but it's loud, musical, has lots of voices and sudden action ... just her sort of film.

Suky has been dipping in and out of it, with the sound of her snores in-between the bouts of action drifting along the hallway as I sit typing this out.

Ginger, being King of the Furries, has claimed the best seat in the house, and the dogs are cuddled up in the weak December sun directly opposite the television.  Mavis is going to be exhausted by the end of the film as she usually sleeps away the morning after their canal-side walk.

Luckily for her we are no doubt going to be sitting still watching something not too actiony after we have our Christmas Dinner at one o'clock ... the one that Alan is doing single-handedly for the first time ever.  She should be able to catch up on her sleep then, if I can find a film with no loud action, no animals and no unusual humans to catch her attention.

Did anyone watch Call the Midwife Christmas Special last night, I thought it was a lovely episode.

  1. I love seeing dogs watch TV. Your third photo is fabulous - Suky does not look particularly impressed or comfortable 😄

Many years ago our old Bearded Collie was quite addicted to 'One Man and His Dog'.

In that house the TV was on an inside wall and one of my favourite memories is seeing him - when the sheep went off screen - get up and walk into the next room to see where they had gone.

    1. That reminds me of a cat I had a long time ago, he loved watching the horse racing and would sit at the end of the television waiting for the horses to run out of the right-hand side. He also sat on top of the television to try and bat the snooker balls when there were overhead shots of the game.

  2. Ruby occasionally watches other dogs on screen but sleeps most of the day given the chance. Most awake just before her twice daily walks.

    1. Dogs and cats have a real talent for sleeping don't they, usually waking only for the most exciting of times ... dinner and walkies.

  5. We recorded Call The Midwife and watched it last night. It was indeed lovely, lots of kindness among the deprivation. We were very glad to hear there will be a new series in the new year.
Don't your furry housemates look cosy!
And well done Alan for cooking, bless him 🤗

    1. It's one of the series that has kept it wonderful high standards of stories and productions through all the years isn't it. I have always loved it, and I enjoy the chronological aspect of it. We are now up to the late sixties and a time that I have good clear memories of.

  6. That is what you mean by Betwixtmas! These are the 12 Days of Christmas, from Boxing Day to Three Kings on 6 January ... when the Christmas decorations come down. For our family a day later for my Father's birthday.

    1. For me it ends on 31st December, when our decorations come down and we prepare to enter the New Year with clear surfaces and a rounding up of the old year. By Alan's birthday on 8th January we are well out of the Christmas festivities and happily into the New Year.

  7. I love the photo of all three of the furry family tucked up and content, it's beautiful! Stephen used to love David Attenborough programmes and that Lloyd Bank advert with the black horses, he'd stand on his hind legs and tap the screen!
Hope Alan's dinner was a success! xxx

    1. Gosh yes, Suky especially loves that advert, it sets her off barking every time she sees it. Alan's dinner was a rousing success and we both retired to the comfy seats afterwards to binge watch Happy Valley in readiness for the new series starting next week.

  8. Is Big Hero 6 that they are watching? We loved that movie. Do watch along with them? There are lots of great animated shows. My grandkids sit like that staring at the tv when we turn it on for them!

    1. Yes, that was it :-)

No I left them to it, I have to be really in the mood for that sort of film, when I am I love them, when I'm not they just annoy me ... I know I'm a funny sod!!

  9. Love the dogs 'watching' TV, Emma was never that interested until she heard animal noises! Totally forgot Call the Midwife was on. That's tonight's viewing sorted! :-)

    1. They do watch avidly and love all sorts of programmes, Rosy our other JR, couldn't 'see' the television and would just react to animal noises, but all these three watch and listen.

  10. Mavis does look completely engrossed in her show. That's adorable!

    1. She really gets into films, reacting to the emotions and everything, it's lovely to watch ... but she needs a cuddle if things get too sad or there are puppies involved.

  11. I don't think I've ever seen pets as engrossed in tv! We once fostered a cat who was definitely part siamese and he was the only one I thought was aware of what was on/happening. When there would be a scene with something moving fast, he'd run right into the tv!

I did watch Call The Midwife. They show it Christmas Day here, though we are a season behind as our season you just finished comes on in the spring. I found myself relating to parts, just based on things related to one of my kids. That program I always feel is so very special. It threads the common human experience and humanity through each story. Gently teaching and guiding. Beautiful.

    1. I think the animals are turning into tv addicts and Mavis has now learnt how to focus on my phone screen if she hears an animal on a reel or TikTok that I'm watching. Mavis especially will sit and watch a whole film if there is enough animal interaction in it, although Suky tends to fall asleep and wake up intermittently to join in watching for a bit. When a programme is over Mavis usually lets out a big sigh and then falls asleep.
